There is a lot on the line for the West Point Green Wave (8-8; 1-0) basketball team tonight.
Hosting the first-place Oxford Chargers, West Point needs this district win to propel them into the No. 1 spot as the team gets ready for an impending playoff scenario in two weeks.
“Last year, we finished second,” said West Point head coach Brad Cox. “In our division, there’s not a lot of difference between the second and third place teams. You definitely want to go in there facing the No. 4 seeded team.”
So far this season, the Green Wave have played 16 games. Only one of those was a district match, a win against Saltillo right before the Christmas Break.
West Point began the season with some solid play, including a recent tournament win at Vardaman.
In the last week and a half, however, the Green Wave defense has been surrendering a lot of points.
West Point gave up 92 to Okolona last weekend, before giving up 80-plus to West Lowndes on Saturday night.
On Tuesday night, the Green Wave hosted their first home game in a month, taking on Starkville. The Yellowjackets put 71 points on the board against the West Point defense in the non-district loss.
Oxford comes into tonight’s game with a dozen wins, including two recent district victories over New Hope (71-62) and Saltillo (91-49).
All of tonight’s action will begin at 6 p.m. with the girls tipping off, followed immediately by the boys game.
