Gifted program crucial tool in identifying students

Teachers and principals of West Point School District elementary schools met after school Monday to hear Carol W. Paola, Mississippi Association for Gifted Children executive director, talk about how important the gifted program is to elementary students who qualify.
“Many teachers and parents confuse bright children with gifted children,” said Paola. “Some students who are gifted are the ones who are the class clowns, or the kid who does their work and sits quietly being bored that teachers don't really notice because they aren't disruptive. They assume the gifted students are the ones who score highly on tests, are clearly focused on the task at hand and are organized to a fault. This is not the case. That's why we have specially designed tests to find those rough diamonds in the classroom who just need a little polishing.”
