Fuller: Large turnout expected for November election

October 3, 2012

With just a few days left before voter registration deadline, Clay County District 4 Election Commissioner Wendy Fuller says that there should be a good turnout on November 6.
“We’re expecting an 80 percent turnout,” Fuller, who also serves as county chairperson on the election commission. “We’re getting prepared for it every day.”
Fuller says that two weeks ago, the county was as many as 500 registered voters up from the last major election. She says that number fluctuates from year-to-year due to people moving, but she says she expects that number is growing daily.
“I’m really proud of this community and the way we’ve stepped up,” Fuller said. “I think we’ve allowed all of the opportunities possible to get registered.”
Fuller says that organizations like the Deltas and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) have been helping potential voters to register and educating them on the process.
“The organizations in Clay County have really been on board,” Fuller said. “We do better because we know better.”
Fuller says that West Point High School was also visited in order to give eligible seniors the chance to register if they chose to do so.
“We’ve really stepped up to the plate on this one,” Fuller said. “We need this education for every election, not just the federal elections. We need to educate people on the candidates for our local elections so they will know who will be representing them.”
Fuller says that besides the Saturday deadline for voter registration, absentee voters need to get their ballots in as soon as possible so that they will be eligible and will be counted.
