Events set for celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

January 14, 2013

Event coordinators hope West Point’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration is going to be a special one this year.
January 21 will be a day of festivities, marking not only King’s life but also the President Barack Obama’s re-election to the presidency.
“This year the celebration will coincide with the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States of America,” said Event Coordinator Anna Hayford-Jones in a press release on Monday. “The theme for this year’s celebration, according to Jones, is “Continuing the Legacy.”
On Monday, January 21, an assembly of marchers will be at the end of Martin Luther King Drive and East Half Mile Street, in West Point.
The procession will commence at 9 a.m. down Martin Luther King Jr, Drive, go through Main Street and end at Center Stage Auditorium, Central School on Westbrook Street.
The program will commence at the Sage Gymnasium at 9:45 a.m. This year’s featured speaker will be Rev. Clementine Mays of Popular Springs CME Church of Shannon, Miss. There will also be a host of children’s groups performing.
All individuals, communities, including churches, organizations and clubs are encouraged to bring banners to show their representation at the march.
“In the event of bad weather there will be a motorcade followed by the program as scheduled at the Center Stage Auditorium,” Jones said.
Long sleeved T-shirts will be available at $15.00 each. For T-shirt information call Valerie Collins at (662) 494-8663 or Hilda Cockrell at 662-494-2160.
For further event information call Earline Mattix at 494-3651 and/or Anna Hayford-Jones at (662) 494-1024 or (662) 494-1173.
