PHEBA –– Hebron Christian senior Brandon England was named to the MAIS 2014 Class-A North all-star baseball team, topping a District 3-A award list full of Eagles.
The Class-A game opens the afternoon doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. The Class-AA and-AAA game follows after the completion of the first game.
“This season was a blessing. It was nothing but fun and hard work,” England said. “We had a few kinks, but we worked through them to have successful season.”
England had a strong season at the plate with a batting average of .439 and held a .597 slugging percentage, scoring 31 runs. The senior collected four doubles, a triple and a homer in district competition.
Sophomores Channing Tapley (Most Valuble Player) and Payton Griffin (Most Valuable Defensive Player), along with junior Drew Myatt (Most Valuble Offensive Player), rounded out a sweep of conference honors.
“I think all four players were deserving of their awards,” Hebron baseball coach Cass Tapley said. “They put in the time over the years to make themselves better. It’s always nice when other coaches recognize them.”
Tapley paced Hebron with a .490 batting average with eight doubles and two home runs. Myatt amassed a .370 batting average with three home runs.
“The award means a lot to me, especially since it was the most offensive award,” Myatt said. “I’m going to try my best next year and hopefully can get even more recognition.
