COLUMBUS â€” East Mississippi Community College is working to get the word on out on pre-employment requirements for manufacturers coming in to the Golden Triangle, and it is enlisting the help of community and business leaders.
Beginning 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Lion Hills Center in Columbus, EMCC â€” in conjunction with the Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM) â€” will host an in-depth informational session on pre-employment requirements for the Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Company. The luncheon session requires registration and a $12.50 luncheon fee, and targets â€ścenters of influenceâ€ť such as ministers, veterans, agency heads, educators and leaders of business, community and economic development. However, the session is open to the public.
â€śItâ€™s actually part of the monthly PRAM luncheon,â€ť said Linda Gates, district director of job placement, work-based learning and military liaison for EMCC. â€śWeâ€™re sensitive to the fact that the $12.50 fee may be a barrier for some â€” especially if youâ€™re unemployed. There will be other sessions without a fee. â€¦ PRAM has taken this on as an outreach effort. Itâ€™s important people understand there are pre-employment requirements, so when the jobs do open up our people are ready for them. We donâ€™t want them to be blindsided.â€ť
Gates said additional sessions had not yet been set in stone, however EMCC hosted two previous sessions in January at its Mayhew campus she said were very similar. The aforementioned sessions encompassed testing requirements and credentials those interested in obtaining work at Yokohama Tire would need prior to being considered for employment. Those requirements include a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) diploma and completion of the WorkKeys test with at least a â€śsilverâ€ť ranking.
