EMCC recognizes local industry at luncheon

April 25, 2014

East Mississippi Community College hosted its 25th annual Industry Appreciation Luncheon Thursday at EMMC’s Golden Triangle Campus in Mayhew.
The luncheon was to honor business and industry partners from the Golden Triangle and East Mississippi region. Mississippi Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves was the keynote speaker for the event.
Reeves said he talks to residents in other parts of Mississippi who don’t fully grasp why so many companies in the last 10 years have chosen to locate in the Golden Triangle.
“They ask me, ‘why is the state government pushing so many employers to one part of our state?” Reeves said. “Fortune 500 companies are going to choose for themselves, and so many have chosen this neck of the woods, and it has nothing to do with people in Jackson.”
Reeves said that companies come to the Golden Triangle because local leaders are working with business leaders to build a team.
“It’s that teamwork that has lead to literally billions of dollars in capital investment in this part of the state,” he said. “It’s the business leaders and local officials here that are to be commended for that.”
Reeves said residents and local officials in the state should adopt an aggressive attitude toward bringing businesses and manufacturing companies to Mississippi.
“The state has a lot to offer and our biggest challenge is getting a major employer to visit here once,” Reeves said. “If they ever come here once, they tend to like what they see.”
