Austin Foster scored the first of three touchdowns for the Hebron Christian Eagles on Friday night, making it a victorious opening week for the 2012 footballs season. Hebron dropped Strider Academy 20-6.
“The team played very well tonight and I am very proud of them,” said Hebron head coach David Foster after the game. “It was extremely hot out tonight and these guys just kept playing. We had few mistakes in first half because we should have been up by two touchdowns at halftime.”
There was not much scoring going on in the first half of the game on either side of the ball.
Hebron was down 6-0 until Forster ran the ball in to tie the game 6-6. That was the halftime score.
“Our guys went in at halftime and I told them our goal was to come out full speed and give it their all,” Foster said.
Give it their all they did. The Eagles played a very energetic second half, which started with a scoreless third quarter.
It was the fourth when all the scoring action occurred.
Taylor Coggins got a handoff from the 23 yard line, and he powered his way to the end zone for the team’s second score. Coggins would later complete the two-point conversion to make it 14-6 Hebron.
The Rams were still struggling to score late in the fourth quarter, and things got tougher for them when the ball was stripped and Hebron’s Channing Tapley picked up the loose ball for a fumble recovery.
With 8:32 left in the ball game, Coggins was given the ball again, this time from the 16 yard line of the Rams, and he made his way to pay dirt for the second time, scoring to make it 20-6 game.
The Rams would take one last shot at scoring on the Eagles, but it was to no avail, as Will Corbin Rogers leaped in the air on a Strider pass, bringing it down for an interception. He returned it to the 43 yard line of Hebron, and that was all she wrote for the Rams.
The Eagles will continue their home stretch next week, hosting Kemper Academy on Friday night.
