Eagles start league play with 32-20 loss to Central Holmes

October 2, 2010

The Hebron Christian Eagles (1-5; 0-1) were hoping that last week's bye would better prepare them for their first conference match, at Central Holmes (3-4; 1-1).
The last time Hebron took the field, two weeks ago, they were defeated 46-12 by the Oak Hill Raiders.
That made it back-to-back home losses for Hebron. In both weeks, they gave up 46 points, the other to Benton.
Central Holmes got on the board in the first quarter on a scoring drive, capped off by a 26 yard touchdown run by Corvell Dixon.
Central Holmes would add two more scores in the second quarter, the first coming on a Hunter Blain touchdown pass to Adam Eades for 26 yards. The two-point conversion made it a 14-0 game.
Wade Self would add an eight-yard touchdown score to make it 20 in the first half for the Trojans.
Hebron scored once in the first half, and the Eagles trailed 20-8, going into the third quarter.
Hebron would score once in the third and one more time in the fourth, failing to convert the PAT both times. Those 12 points would not be enough, as Self added a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth, followed by a six-yard rushing score by Blain on the keeper.
When the 2010 season started, numbers were higher than 2009 for the Eagles, but their roster still began with under 20 players. As the season has progressed, lack of depth and injuries have taken their toll on the Eagle players.
The Eagles went into Friday night's game, catching the Trojans in their worst slump of the season. Central Holmes was coming off its fourth consecutive loss, including its first district game against Winona Christian the week before.
With the win on Friday, Central Holmes was able to keep itself in the playoff race, by drawing even in district play.
Hebron is going to get a break from league play next week, as they travel to Carroll Academy to take on the Rebels.
They will return to conference ball the next week, on the road, at Immanuel. The Rams defeated Houlka on Friday night, 14-13.
Central Holmes will travel to Humphreys Academy.
