The Hebron Christian Eagles took the No. 3 seed going into the district tournament this season. That tournament will begin tonight, at Central Academy in Macon.
The Eagles finished the season with a 6-4 record in the district. They were beaten by Immanuel two times, Kemper and Winona.
The Eagles have to feel good going into tonight opening match, as they played the Central Vikings twice this season, defeating them both times. Hebron head coach Greg Watkins knows that what happened in the regular season is not going to make it any easier tonight.
“It’s always tough to beat somebody three times,” Watkins said. “This time it’s going to be down there at their gym. It’s going to be tough.”
The Eagles had a solid regular season, finishing 12-7. The boys finished off the regular season with a buzzer shot loss to the Oak Hill Academy Raiders last Monday. That was a team they had beaten in a December match.
The Eagles have been led in scoring this season by Carlton Clay, who has put up big numbers under the net.
Clay has not been the team’s lone weapon, however, as senior Chad Smith and junior Will Corbin Rogers have provided much of Hebron’s offense.
Taylor Coggins and Kevin Simmons have also lifted the Eagles’ offense and defense during this season.
Junior Ben Pearson threw up three three-point shots against Oak Hill in the season’s finale.
The Eagles have a potent offense and a very capable defense. With that combination, they will be competitive in the upcoming week.
If Hebron wins, they will play the No. 2 seeded Kemper on Thursday.
The Hebron girls will play on Thursday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Winona-Calhoun game.
Later this week, the Daily Times Leader will have team pictures and results from the recent junior high tournament games involving Hebron.
