CALHOUN CITY — Hebron Christian (7-3; 4-0 District 7-A) clinched its first eight-man district title and postseason berth with a thrilling win against rival Calhoun Academy, 20-14, in a MAIS District 7-A contest Friday at Billy D. Cook Field on the campus of Calhoun Academy.
In the last minute of the game, Channing Tapley took a shotgun snap and weaved through three Calhoun defenders en route to a 31-yard carry and a third-and-27 conversion to seal the 20-14 Hebron victory – the Eagles fifth consecutive win.
Time expired with Hebron in possession after the third-down conversion, making Tapley’s final run the most important carry for the Eagle sophomore quarterback, even though he had previously provided his team with a pair of touchdown carries of five and eight yards in the third-quarter, along with the 22-yard winning touchdown screen pass to junior Drew Myatt with six minutes remaining in the game.
Tapley finished his night with 11 carries for 90 yards and five of nine passing for 62 yards, helping the Eagles get by the Cougars.
“We called a trap,” Tapley said, recounting his third-down conversion run. “I saw where the space was and just got there. It felt great after I got the first down.”
