The West Point Green Wave baseball team is ready to hit the field.
Unfortunately for the Diamond Wave, a line of storms swept through the state on Friday, keeping the team from playing the three games they were slated to play in the Hatley Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Today, the team gets a chance to hit the home field, taking on the Yellowjackets of Starkville High School. It will be a non-district game.
“They are always competitive,” said West Point head coach Buddy Wyers of Starkville. “They always have had good teams down through the years.”
Wyers said that he watched Starkville play recently, and though the Yellowjackets lost a few players last year, he says it should still be some good baseball.
West Point has had a promising string of pre-season games.
The team started off with a pair of jamboree games at Columbus. In both games, the Green Wave were down in their final at-bat. In one, they came back to win, and they tied the other after four innings.
In their weekend Classic, the Green Wave won both games they played, including a three-inning perfect game pitched by Dalton Davis.
Now the Diamond Wave are ready to hit the field to try and prepare for a tough district schedule that will start in a couple of weeks.
With a few games scheduled over the Spring Break, the team should be ready to face district rival Saltillo on March 22.
They will play another match with Saltillo on March 25, and they will play a pair with New Hope the next week.
