Davis’ three propels Wave over Kemper County

November 20, 2012

Juan Davis nailed a clutch corner three at the 3:15 minute mark of the fourth quarter with the game tied 49-49. Davis’s shot sparked a 10-2 scoring stretch allowing the Green Wave to beat Kemper County 63-56 on Monday night.
West Point led the whole game after starting the first quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 10-1 midway through the quarter. The Wave was able to keep their lead over Kemper County ending the quarter 20-12. West Point continued their well-played first half in the second quarter with strong shooting and great defense. Both Kemper County and West Point got into the foul bonus, though it had little effect on the first half run of play. The Wave finished strong going into halftime outscoring the Wildcats 14-8 in the quarter and a fourteen point lead, 34-20.
The Wildcats though came out with a better game plan after the halftime interval. Kemper County took a 7-2 scoring stretch through the 5:48 mark of the third quarter and did not stop scoring. The Wave had difficulty finding rhythm from the floor but was able to remain in the game. The Wildcats outscored West Point 24-12 in the quarter and cut the Wave’s fourteen point lead within two.
A bad display of shooting led to a dry spell from both teams for the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. But Kemper County finally was able to tie up the Wave at 49 with 5:02 left, tying the game for the first time since the start of the game. Once again, both teams went cold from the floor and the physicality picked up between the Wave and Wildcats. Then the spark occurred, Davis’s go ahead three-pointer led the Green Wave to victory 63-56.
West Point was lead in scoring by Davis contributing 17 points. Demarius Calvert scored 15 points along with A.J. Jones with 13 points. Also scoring were Tre Williams, Diquan Ewing, and Tony Craddeth all with 6 points.
West Point has played well in their first five games of the season and put together some good victories over quality opponents. The Wave will continue their schedule after a five day break at the Houston Tournament on Saturday November 24. Tip-off is set for 6:00 P.M. in Houston. The Wave will return home to play Okolona Thursday November 29.
