County taps jail project consultant

Another step has been made in the construction of a new regional jail for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. The Clay County Board of Supervisors made its decision Thursday after tabling discussion on which contractor would be employed, in addition to amendments made in the contract, for consultation of the erection of a new, upward of, $21 million facility at last week’s meeting.
The construction of a new facility stems from Sheriff Eddie Scott’s recognition of the fact that the current jail has undergone about 50 years worth of dilapidation. Scott proposed to the board two possible routes for the project earlier this month: A new county-specific jail or a new regional jail (which would entail a cooperative effort between Clay County and a second county).
Although this is great news for the CCSD, there are still crucial steps that need to be taken. In order to garner funding for the project, the board was required to choose, out of two contractors, the most feasible and cost-effective route prior to blasting it off to state legislature.
