Cooking school to open this Fall

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to cook but didn’t know where to turn, then West Point’s new cooking school will give you the tools you need to be a master in the kitchen.
Culin Arts owner Valeda Carmichael and Le Cordon Bleu graduate and chef Matthew Molina have teamed up to create Palate Panache, a cooking school slated to open in October for beginners to those who just want to try something new. Work on the school has already began and will be located next to Culin Arts.
Carmichael said having a cooking school for the people in the Golden Triangle has always been a dream of hers.
“I’ve always wanted my own kitchen shop and place where I can do cooking classes,” Carmichael said. “I saw this building next door and thought that would make the perfect little cooking school.”
Not only will students learn how to prepare food, but the school will offer catering and parties, have an herb garden, allow people to come in occasionally and buy the food and have special functions for groups upon their request. Carmichael said there will be everything from gourmet, to sushi, to wine tastings, to children’s classes, giving people a variety of things to do and making the possibilities endless.
Having a cooking school in the area will be a real convenience, Carmichael said, especially for those who are serious about learning to cook.
“There’s nothing else like this in the Golden Triangle,” Carmichael said. “You have to drive two or three hours in any direction to even get to another cooking school. This is going to draw more people here and help grow the economy of West Point.”
Both Carmichael and Molina have culinary backgrounds and have had extensive experience in cooking, so students can be assured that they will be taught everything they need to know about cooking and all their questions will be answered.
Carmichael said she wants to get area children involved in the classes and plans to have special events specifically for children.
“Next summer we’ll be doing a lot of weeklong Kids In The Kitchen camps for all ages,” she said. “During Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we may do children’s classes on cookies and things for that time of year.”
Carmichael said this school will be far from bland and boring, and students should expect to have a great time while learning new skills.
“It’s going to be anything and everything that’s fun and good,” she said.
