Colbert trekking Mississippi River from Minnesota

October 22, 2013

It won’t be long before the break ends for 62-year-old and former International Business Machines (IBM) employee John Colbert. Once it does, the occasionally jagged and confused waves of the Mississippi River will welcome his — and his seasoned kayak’s — return.
A Starkville native, transcontinental voyager and Mississippi State University graduate, Colbert hails in the realm of science and engineering. Proof positive that his 31 years spent designing new components for mainframe computers and supercomputers was no inadvertence.
After graduating from MSU with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Colbert shipped straight off to Charlotte, N.C. where he began his career at IBM. But, it didn’t go quite as expected.
“I worked for (IBM) for two months and they decided I still wasn’t smart enough,” said Colbert.
From there, IBM packaged him up and sent him down the pipelines to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in New York for one solid year.
