West Point will start practice next Monday coming off a state championship season in 2016. West Point head coach Chris Chambless took time to talk about the summer program and the upcoming 2017 season.

SUMMER WORKOUT PROGRAM

Chambless: “It’s gone really well. I’m proud of how hard our guys have worked. We’ve had guys that are really pushing each other and getting better. Our guys have worked hard this summer to make sure they’re ready for the fall. “

SEVEN-ON-SEVEN SUMMER CAMPS

Chambless: “It’s all about timing. You can really get a lot better with timing in seven-on-seven. It’s great for us. As long as you’re able to stick to what we do and not put anything in that we’re not going to do during the season. Our coaches have done a great job with that. We’ve kept things as positive as possible.”

GAINS FROM SUMMER PROGRAM

Chambless: “The summer is always about the grind and the battle that you’re going to have to go through when the season starts. You’re going to win some of those, and you’re going to lose some of those. During the summer we want to use that to create the mental toughness that we’ll need throughout the season.”

THE QUARTERBACK POSITION

Chambless: “Marcus (Murphy) is our guy. Jake (Chambless) can spin it pretty good as well. The offensive coaches do a great job of putting us in the best situations to win ball games, and that’s why we’ve got them. We know what our players can do in certain situations, and we’re going to do that and put ourselves in the best situation to win ball games. We’ll use things that we used last year, and we’ll try to build on that.”

MARCUS MURPHY'S QUARTERBACK SKILLS

Chambless: “Marcus can throw it well, so we’re going to build on that. That’s why teams can’t load the box on us, because he can throw it on them. He can throw it down the field to some great receivers that we have. Jason Brownlee has been tremendous for us this summer at the receiver position. He has the ability to make a quarterback look really good.”

COMING BACK OFF A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Chambless: “We have to realize that we have an X on our back after winning the state championship. Our guys try to follow the tradition here. The community has an expectation for these guys. The community wants a competitive good bunch that’s going to play hard and make us proud. Our guys try to put their mark on the program in every single way. You don’t want to be the group that lets people down”
