CCSD arrests 21 in local roundup

May 22, 2014

Clay County Sheriff’s Department deputies had plenty to keep them busy Tuesday, as the department arrested 21 area residents on a number of charges in its latest “roundup.”
Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said the morning-long operation stemmed from April grand jury indictments. CCSD typically engages in a mass roundup about twice a year, Scott said.
“We started out focusing on our (alleged) drug dealers,” Scott said. “In this case we had multiple drug sales … we didn’t get to them all, but we’ll be serving more. … We wanted to concentrate on some of our violent offenders, too. Everything went very well.”
Law enforcement officials from 30 local, regional and state agencies, including West Point Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks assisted in the operation, he said. Planning for the roundup began more than a week in advance, with responders reviewing a “pre-raid” plan prior to Tuesday’s arrests. Scott said officials notified 911 dispatch, local fire departments and additional emergency response personnel to ensure officer and resident safety.
“We have the ambulance on standby,” Scott said. “We go through all the checks and balances like making sure everyone has their vests … just general good practices.”
Scott said the element of surprise played a key role, as well. Officers began making arrests about 6 a.m. in an effort to catch alleged offenders while still sleeping. The tactic serves to cut down on the possibility of escape or potential retaliation, he said.
