With 63 percent of votes cast in her favor from residents of Clay County, West Point native Angela Turner-Lairy was victorious Tuesday night in Clay County during the Special Election for Senate District 16.
Turner-Lairy, daughter of the late Sen. Bennie Turner, gained a total of 2508 votes from Clay County residents, not including absentee and affidavit ballots. By press time, tallies from Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Noxubee counties, which are all represented in District 16, could not be determined.
The results of Tuesday night’s election are unofficial, and the Daily Times Leader will bring you a report with official results once all votes have been counted and certified by the Clay County Election Commission.
Turner-Lairy could not be reached after the election but said during her campaign launch that she has “no hidden agenda. I’m willing to go down there to Jackson if elected and do the work. I also understand that if elected I will be new to the position so that will require a lot of hard work and determination on my part, but I’m willing to get in there and familiarize myself with the issues, listen to the people and make an informed decision based on the information that is presented to me.”
Fowler was at the courthouse for most of Tuesday evening as the ballots were being tallied.
By 9 p.m.., Fowler had conceded the race.
“I appreciate all of my supporters,” Fowler said. “They all worked really hard.”
Fowler’s campaign was centered on education and jobs, two issues he has been close to, volunteering in the West Point School District for years.
“This is my first time to ever run for public office,” Fowler said. “It’s hard. Campaigning is hard. I appreciate the folks who voted for me and all of my supporters.”
