The Oak Hill Academy Raiders have a promising class coming up in the seventh and eighth grade levels.
When they hit the practice field on Tuesday, Raider head coach Leroy Gregg was impressed with the group of about 32.
They didn’t wear pads, but the guys used practice on the field this week as an extension of their usual weight room activities.
“It’s really been pretty good,” Gregg said of junior high practice so far. “We’ve been getting them out there, doing offense, throwing the ball around and running.”
The junior high bunch walked on to the field at about 9:30 on Tuesday morning, and they did the same on Wednesday.
They made good use of their time on the field, working just the basic fundamentals of the game.
“Most of them have had two really good days so far,” Gregg said of his young squad.
After all of the warm-ups were over with on Wednesday, the group got right to work, practicing work on the line and offensive strategy.
Gregg says that the group he has now at the middle school level shows great promise for the future at Oak Hill.
“We’ve got 32 out there,” he said. “The eighth grade class is outstanding both numbers wise and as skill players and linemen. Seventeen of my junior high boys are in that group.”
Gregg says that the junior high boys will be in pads on Tuesday.
As for the varsity team, Wednesday was another good practice, according to Gregg.
The Raider quarterbacks threw the ball well all day.
Gregg says that Wednesday is historically the worst on players, but he said that his team worked through that very well this year.
