Bennett finishes second at AAU Olympic trials

August 22, 2011

West Point Dontavious Bennett is playing the waiting game on whether he made the AAU United States Junior Olympic team.

Bennett competed in the AAU JR OLYMPICS in New Orleans on the 29th of July and finished in second place.

Bennett says it’s been a lot of sweating and a lot of tears these last couple of months but he has no regrets. He says he realize he’s not gifted or lucky he’s just blessed! He thanks God for his athletic abilities.

“My mother ,Tamika Bennett, once told me you won’t be successful if you have never been through anything in life,” he said. “My parents Willie and Tamika Bennett has been very supportive of me being in karate. They never told me I couldn’t do karate or held me back from it no matter how expensive it gets. I feel like my father is watching his self in me when I’m doing karate."

Dontavious says his parents,Master Nash, Sensei Nash, Lee and Cannon are his motivation. He plans to pursue karate whether he makes the Olympic team or not.

“What’s a car without a motor,”I ask myself? Master Jimmy Nash is my motor, he keeps me focused and thinking karate at all times. Master Nash is always telling me “ Lil Bennett you got to be able to think and fight at the same time son!” “A smart fighter will beat someone fighting out of anger,”  he says.

Dontavious will be competing on the 15th of October at the Bryan Union Hall where several of the state’s top karate athletes will be competing.
