Barclay impressive in early-going

February 28, 2011

The West Point Green Wave baseball team is still quite young. Despite most of the guys on the team having played a good bit over the last couple of years, the Green Wave are still trying to find the right spots for some of their players.
There is one spot that head coach Buddy Wyers thinks might be sown up for quite a few years to come.
Freshman Bruce Barclay has impressed his coaches over the course of the last couple of weeks, and he might have won himself the catcher's job.
“He is working out phenomenally,” Wyers said on Monday. “He's done everything we could ask of a freshman catcher.”
Wyers said that all of the information that a catcher has to absorb may have overwhelmed the youngster a bit at first, but now he's adjusting, and he's excelling in game situations.
“He's learned a lot there,” Wyers said. “He's made some very good plays.”
Wyers moved Barclay up to the varsity squad this summer, mostly because he was so versatile.
“He's so athletic,” Wyers said. “There's so many positions he can play, but he helps the team best as catcher.”
In 2010, Wyers platooned a number of guys at the position, but Barclay's love for the game has put in position to be the number one man in the battery.
“He's still got a ways to go, but he's got so much love for what he's doing,” Wyers said. “He's got so much energy. When he gets excited, it gets the rest of the fielders excited out there.”
Barclay has not wavered at the plate either. He scored a run in last week's jamboree, and he smacked a hit on Friday night against Shannon. He had a two-run single in Saturday's 15-0 win over East Oktibbeha as well.
