The season is still early for the three area baseball teams. West Point, Oak Hill and Hebron Christian will all be participating in Spring Break baseball later this week, hoping to get better prepared for the road ahead.
That road is going to be paved with a lot of crucial district games for all three teams, but the three clubs have shown early on that they are ready to make a playoff run.
West Point will go into the Alcorn Central Tournament on Thursday with an overall 4-1 record. They have yet to play a district game, the first one coming next Tuesday, at Saltillo. They will face three teams over the weekend.
The Green Wave team hit the diamond for the first time about three weeks ago at a jamboree in Columbus. The team rallied from behind in both games, leaving one tied. The following week, the Diamond Wave hosted a Classic, winning both games they played against Shannon and East Oktibbeha.
The team suffered its first loss against Shannon last week, but they immediately answered that with a win at Columbus on Friday and a victory at Hamilton on Saturday afternoon.
The Oak Hill Raiders, starting on senior and one junior, are the youngest players around, but they have had early success as well.
The Raiders defeated Hebron Christian in their second game this season, and a week later, they won at home against Macon Central. The Raiders will hit the road on Tuesday to take on Manchester, in Yazoo City, to jump-start district play.
Hebron will go into the Winona Tournament this weekend with two wins under its belt. The Eagles got a crucial district win, just prior to the break last Friday, a 16-5 victory over the Kemper Rams.
The Eagles, who also beat Immanuel Christian early last week, will welcome the Winona Christian Stars to the diamond next Tuesday.
There is a lot of youth, spelling a lot of future baseball success in Clay County, but don’t count out these young players in 2011.
