Applications for the 2017 West Point Christmas Parade, themed “Home for the Holiday,” are now available at the Growth Alliance or at www.westpointms.org.

The parade is set for 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5., and the deadline for applications is Nov. 20. The entry fee is $25.

Growth Alliance Director Lisa Klutts said it is important for entries to follow the rules and guidelines listed on the application.

“Read all of the rules and guidelines,” she said. “The parade is not easy to coordinate, are there are a lot of logistics with that many people and vehicles all together after dark. Bottom line, the rules are for everyone’s safety.”

The parade route is approximately one mile beginning at the Post Office and ending at the Save-a-Lot parking lot. Lineup for the parade will begin at 5 p.m.

Participating floats that fit the theme will be awarded $150 first place prize, $125 second place prize, $100 third place prize and honorable mentions. Judges from neighboring communities will judge the floats based on the general effect of the presentation, workmanship, parade theme and originality.

Klutts said she encouraged as many people to participate in the parade as possible.

“The more the better,” she said. “The parade is only as good as the participation. When I started this job a few years ago. everyone wanted the parade to go back to being as big as it was when they were kids. That’s only possible if everyone participates.”

Klutts said the judges will be outside of City Hall along with Growth Alliance assistant Iralita Gibbs who will emcee the parade and introduce each float as they drive by.

Klutts said the “Home for the Holidays” theme was chosen to allow all aspects of Christmas to be celebrated during the parade.

“The theme is anywhere from religious to the Griswolds in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and tacky Christmas sweaters,” she said. “It is a broad enough theme for people to use their creativity and encompass all that Christmas is about.”
