In the two games the West Point boys lost in at the Aberdeen Tournament last weekend, they were down early, but came back playing hard in the second half. Both times the early deficits run up by Okolona and West Lowndes were too great to overcome.
On Tuesday night, the 8-8 Green Wave repeated that trend, falling behind by a large number of points to the Yellowjackets of Starkville, only to surge back in the second half, and fall in the end 71-54.

Prior to last night’s games against Starkville, the last time the West Point basketball players took the court in front of the home crowd was December 18. Almost a month later, the Green Wave program is not only looking to reacquainting itself with the home floor, but the two teams are looking to play some important district games.
The boys and the girls have a 1-0 record in district play, defeating Saltillo on December 17.

No one has been scoring off the Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders (18-6; 5-0) lately. The Heritage Academy girls were no exception on Monday night, as they fell while hosting Oak Hill 52-33.
“We played really hard and really smart,” said Oak Hill head coach Stan Hughey.
Heritage’s top player, Rachel Hollivay, was shut down by the Oak Hill defense that allowed the college recruit just 10 points on the night.

When the Oak Hill Academy Raiders (9-12; 3-2) have been on this season, it’s been really hard to stop them. Take last week’s non-district game against Calhoun where they won 54-42, a game Oak Hill was in control of from the start.
The next night, however, they fell at the buzzer to district rival Carroll, on the road.
With not boys Winston team, the Raiders were forced to sit out Saturday, and they returned to the court on Monday night at Heritage. Oak Hill fell to the hosting Raiders 52-39.

The Lady Green Wave basketball players have been on a roll since December. The girls will enter tonight’s home game against Starkville with a 13-2 overall record, with a 1-0 mark in district play.
They have not lost since the beginning of the season, and they seem to be getting better every time out.
A week after claiming the first-place trophy at the Vardaman Tournament, the West Point bunch traveled to the Aberdeen Tourney this past weekend, and they won both games there to claim first-place again.

The Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders (17-6; 5-0) had to stay in tournament mode for last weekend. While it’s not uncommon for the girls to play on Thursday and again on Friday, it isn’t very often the Lady Raiders have to play a third game on Saturday, especially a district match.
Oak Hill showed no worries though, as they rolled past Calhoun Academy 67-27 on Thursday night. They followed that performance up with a Friday night road win over district rival Carroll by a 54-19 score.

There is still time to get kids signed up for the city’s youth basketball league, but time is running out fast.
Tomorrow will be the final day kids can be added.
The Parks and Recreation Department extended the deadline, which was originally December 30, giving locals more time to sign up.
With the hard economic times still upon most, and Christmas just past, Parks Director James Crowley said that they took the measure to alleviate some of that pressure.

The Club also has a supply of pink hats detailing the 2010 championship.
Club President Kenny Fowler says that there should be more products coming in the future, including hats and a DVD of the 2010 season.
