Humphries tapped for all-star team

On Wednesday morning, West Point senior Chris Humphries was added to the Bernard Blackwell All-Star North Team roster at a Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) press conference in Clinton. The Blackwell All-Star football game features 80 of the top players in Mississippi, divided into North and South teams. The game is scheduled for noon kickoff Saturday, Dec. 20, in Gulfport.

Clay County teams hit gridiron

After the first half of the season, in which non-district opponents were played, the Clay County football teams are hoping to make progress in division championship bids and postseason aspirations.

The supporting cast sometimes gets pushed to the wayside. In the wake of other teammates’ success, the role players fade into the shadows.

Darnell commits life to Christ

On Aug. 21, several local businesses, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) board members and coaches, who brought their teams to Starkville, kicked off the high school football season by showing the movie "When the Game Stands Tall."
After testimonies before the movie and the movie’s showing, Oak Hill junior Kaleb Darnell committed his life to Jesus Christ. He was baptized last Wednesday at the Oak Hill football field in West Point. Darnell was one of 26 high school players that committed their lives.

US claims seventh Handa Cup

With the score even (12-12) after the opening round of best ball and alternate shot in the ninth annual ISPS Handa Cup, the title came down to the final day, in which the U.S. and World teams squared off in 12 individual matches.
The U.S.A.’s Beth Daniel and Juli Inkster claimed the first two of three matches en route to a 28-20 victory over the World team in the Handa Cup’s final round Sunday at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point.

Hebron downs Delta

PHEBA — With only 14 players on the roster, Hebron Christian does not have much time to rest.
Hebron (4-2) used three turnovers and Landon Hill’s big individual night to down Delta Academy (2-4), 38-14, in a non-district 8-man game Friday at Hebron Christian School in Pheba.
“A pretty good effort on all our parts against Delta,” Hebron Head Coach David Foster said. “Defensively, we did well not giving them the edge, and we caused some turnovers.”

Oxford throttles West Point

When momentum swings, anything can happen.
The Oxford Chargers made major things happen as they rode a huge upward swing to a road win.
No. 6 Oxford (4-1; 1-0 District 1-5A) scored 35 unanswered points in the final 26 minutes, dispatching West Point, 43-22, in both teams’ division opener Friday at McCallister Field in West Point. The win was Oxford’s second consecutive victory over the Green Wave after losing eight straight games when the series started in 2005.

USA, World even in ISPS Handa Cup

Two-time Women’s U.S. Open champion Juli Inkster has a lot of fondness for Old Waverly Golf Course. One of those memories is winning her first U.S. Open at the course.
The good memories associated with the West Point golf club could continue to build as Inkster, competing in her first LPGA Legends Tour event, and foursome partner Meg Mallon helped fuel a seven-point rebound for the USA team at the ninth-annual ISPS Handa Cup Saturday at Old Waverly in West Point.
