Oak Hill battles undefeated Leake in district play to headline basketball Friday

Another big night of basketball is scheduled for Friday for area high schools and junior high squads.

Oak Hill continues district play with Leake Academy at home, while West Point kicks off their region in a matchup with Saltillo also at home. Hebron makes the short drive to Starkville to take on Starkville Christian School.

Eagles drop second straight on the road at Old Dominion

WEST - Hebron Christian had three players finish in double figures Tuesday night, however the effort wasn't enough to garner a victory.

The Eagles dropped their second game in a row, falling to Old Dominion 68-64 in non-district action. The loss put the Eagles at 6-6 on the season overall and 1-1 in MAIS 3A action.

With the Eagles trailing 31-27 at the half, Old Dominion stretched the lead to 14-points in the third quarter and tried to put the game out of reach.

Hebron doubled up at East Webster

MABEN - Despite a season high for Tori Nichols, Hebron's five game winning streak was snapped Monday night following a 52-46 loss to East Webster.

The Lady Eagles, 8-6 had a tough time adjusting to the height difference early in the ball-game, but that didn't keep them from finding the basket. However they still trailed by four at the half.

Green Wave named to All-State football teams

West Point's early exit from the playoffs hasn't stopped several Green Wave from earning postseason honors in 2011. This week, four Green Wave were named to the Class 5A MHSAA All-State team as chosen by the coaches.

Senior Romia Wilson, who was also selected to represent in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game earned his his second post season honor after being named to First-Team Offense.

Raiders hold off Green Wave

BATESVILLE - Oak Hill never trailed in Saturday’s ball game against North Delta Academy.
A 22-point first quarter performance didn’t hurt their chances either as the Raiders downed the Green Wave 46-42 to pick up their second win in a row and second this season over North Delta.
It’s the second time this season the Raiders, 7-6, 1-1 have won back-to-back games since a three game streak in November with victories over Heritage, Carroll and North Delta.

West Point loses double header to Neshoba

MACON - West Point’s girls basketball team didn’t have a single player score in double digits Saturday as the Green Wave dropped their second in a row 60-35 to Neshoba Central in the Noxubee County Invitational.
Wilma Davis and Adrianna Billups had eight points apiece to lead the girls who “came out flat” head coach Murray Woody said.
“We just didn’t play well, we couldn’t get any shots,” he said. It was their fourth loss in the last five games.
The Green Wave (5-6) were held to just six points in the opening quarter, and by halftime the deficit grew to 13-points, 29-16.

Oak Hill doubles up Winston

Oak Hill’s Lady Raiders didn’t hold Winston to under 20-points Friday night, but they came close.
Nonetheless, a 67-32 win over the Lady Patriots moved them to 2-0 in the district as they continue their quest for a third straight district title.
After scoring 23-points in the opening quarter, Oak Hill (11-3) never trailed in the ball game and by half time had a comfortable 41-14 lead.

West Point girls snap losing skid

On any given night, you can find Wilma Davis scoring at least 10-points, most nights its a little more.
Friday, the senior finished with 15 to help stop a three-game losing streak following a 68-51 win over Aberdeen.
Head coach Murray Woody said her confidence has been a little shaken lately, but that hasn’t stopped her leading the team in scoring every night.
“I keep telling her, ‘keep shooting, because shooters go through slumps’,” he said.
If her 15-points was a slump, it was enough to help West Point (5-5) get their first victory in almost two weeks.

West Point, Oak Hill hit the courts this weekend

Nearly a full slate of basketball will be in store this weekend for area teams here in Clay County.
All three schools will be in action tonight in some capacity with Oak Hill and West Point on the road on Saturday. Hebron’s junior high teams will be in Oxford.

West Point finally snapped a three-game losing skid this week with a 68-65 win over Noxubee County. The boys, now 4-5, topped the Tigers in Macon for the first time in almost a decade.
Accolades aside, head coach Brad Cox said the win was more important.

Eagles stop skid, Lady Eagles win five straight

Hebron Christian earned their first conference win of the season in the heels of a defensive effort that netted 22 total steals, 49-39 over Calhoun Academy.

The victory snapped another two game skid for the Eagles who improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-1 in 3A action.

“It was a slow defensive game, both of us were in a zone,” head coach Tri Nason explained. ‘Once we started shooting from the outside, they switched to man and that loosened them up the rest of the game. We started stealing, driving and making easy lay-ups.”
