Hebron Christian takes care of business against Victory 59-31

November 28, 2012

In a game that Hebron Christian’s greatest lead was 35 at one point, the Eagles looked as if they had not skipped a beat after a two week break from competitive play. The last Varsity game the Eagles played was a thrashing win over Grace Christian of Louisville on November 13.

Lady Eagles lose at the buzzer to Victory Christian 40-39

November 28, 2012

It all came down to the final minute of play between Hebron Christian and Victory Christian in Pheba Tuesday night. A Subrina Oswalt go-ahead basket with only seven seconds left seemed to clinch the Lady Eagle win, but Victory Christian had other plans in mind. Victory, after a timeout, inbounded the ball from their baseline, drove down the court, and hit a 25 foot shot as the game clock expired to defeat Hebron 40-39.

November 28, 2012

It’s time for Upward Basketball and Cheerleading again.
Evaluations begin Monday at 5:30 p.m.
This thriving ministry has been a part of West End Baptist Church’s outreach to the community for eight years, and it has grown in each year of its existence.
The unique structure of Upwards Sports places an emphasis on a spiritual atmosphere that involves sportsmanship and equal playing time.
“We are blessed to have this for the whole community,” said Gail Ray, an Upwards organizer for West End.

Hamby’s biggest wish is to play for West Point

November 28, 2012

Wade Hamby finally got to play football for the West Point Parks and Recreation PeeWee league last year.
At the time, he was 5 years-old, getting playing time with an 8 year-old team.
In May, Hamby’s dreams of hitting the field this fall were shattered when doctors discovered a tumor on one of his lungs. Hamby had previously undergone heart surgery at 16 months.
Now at age 6, he’s going through pre-operational procedures that would make most adults cringe.

West Point loss to Starkville a heartbreaker

November 26, 2012

West Point returned to Starkville for the second time this year to take on the Yellow Jackets in the North Half Championship game. The Green Wave had a tall order ahead of them as they wanted to seek redemption over Starkville who knocked out West Point in the 2011 playoffs.
In a hard fought game, the Wave and Jackets needed more than four quarters to decide the winner in Starkville. After one overtime period, the Yellow Jackets were the victors with a Gabe Myles two-point conversion run, 29-28.

Is recruiting a dotted line business?

November 26, 2012

I have been watching the NBC syndicated series “Friday Night Lights” the past couple of weeks. In the current season, the head coach for the fictional Dillon Panthers Eric Taylor, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, informs his players that any recruiting violations will hurt the player and team. Many of the recruiters for the universities push for Dillon’s top-rated running back, Smash Williams. The majority of these recruiters offer Smash special treatment, money, and even cars if he will chose to attend their university or college.

Wins against West Point hard to come by in 2012

November 26, 2012

The West Point Green Wave (11-3; 7-0) had a number of lopsided victories during the 2012 season.
One thing the team did not have was a lopsided loss.
Of the three blemishes on the West Point schedule, including Friday night’s season-ending loss to Starkville, the Green Wave did not lose by any more than six points in each defeat.
The first loss of the season came during week one against South Panola. The final score was 12-10 in favor of the hosting Batesville team.

West Point falls just short to Starkville 29-28

November 24, 2012

Once again it was Starkville’s Gabe Myles who handed the Wave their final loss of the season. This time it took an overtime period to decide the team that got to travel to Jackson. Myles threw the overtime touchdown and ran in the winning two-point conversion to lead the Jackets past West Point for a second time in a row in postseason play.

Wave seeking redemption against Starkville

November 21, 2012

It was a hard fought affair the last time Starkville and West Point met in the playoffs.
A fourth quarter drive led by Starkville Quarterback Gabe Myles put out the then two-time defending 5A champions in West Point 20-14.
Last year was not the Wave’s year in the West Point-Starkville rivalry as the Yellow Jackets doubled up on the Green Wave. But in 2012, West Point won the regular season game in Starkville 47-22, and hopes to find redemption this year in the North Half Championship.

Lady Wave fall to Kemper

November 20, 2012

The Lady Wave could not get much done Monday night against Kemper County as the Lady Wildcats ran rampant in the West Point gym. West Point was on the wrong side of a twenty point deficit and fell to the Lady Wildcats 53-33.
