Hebron wins big, looks toward playoffs

PHEBA — The Hebron Christian Academy Eagles won their final game of the regular season Friday night over the Kemper Academy Rams, clinching the No. 1 seed in the north heading into the 3-A playoffs.

Oak Hill tennis team falls to Manchester Academy

The Oak Hill tennis team dropped its first district match Monday afternoon 5-4 in West Point. It came down to the last match of the day and the Mavericks of Manchester Academy held off the Raiders to remain undefeated in district play.
“We played well despite the weather, but they are a really good team and have 11 returning seniors this year,” Coach Brian Middleton said. “I was pleased with how we competed on a nasty day.”
In boys’ singles, John Willis Stevens defeated Alex Dixon (6-1)(6-1) and Will Kelly defeated Matt Huggins (6-3)(6-7)(7-6) in a split set tiebreaker.

Wave’s Williams signs with ECCC

Senior West Point Guard Tre Williams inked with East Central Community College Tuesday morning after being named all-district last season averaging 9.75 points and four rebounds a game. Coach Brad Cox said that he thinks he can succeed at the next level because Williams is a solid, all-around player who shoots the ball well from the perimeter.
“I chose East Central because I like their coaching staff, and they seem to care a lot about their players and helping them be successful,” said Williams. “I just felt like it was a place where it could help me get better.”

Raiders win third straight in conference

The Oak Hill Raiders notched their third straight conference win — a 10-7 victory over the Leake Academy Rebels — Wednesday night to draw to an even 4-4 in District 2-AA. Led by a three-hit and four RBI performance from senior first baseman Joseph Caskey, the Raiders beat division rival Leake academy for the second consecutive night.

PHEBA — The Hebron Christian Eagles are now 5-0 in district play and picked up a 13-2 road division win behind four long balls from the Hebron bats. Channing Tapley, Brandon England, Landon Hill and Payton Griffin all earned home runs to propel the Eagles to the victory.

Green Wave bb players earn all-district honors

After leading their basketball team to a 26-6 season, four West Point High School seniors have been named all-district by league coaches.

Juan Davis, A.J. Jones, Tre Williams and Demarius Calvert were instrumental in the team’s winning season, according to West Point High School Coach Brad Cox, who said he is proud of how each competed.

Baseball: the game of life

The grass is greener, the sky is bluer and spring is in the air. And if you’re anything like me that only means one thing: Baseball season is in full swing. Flashback about 14 years or so, and picture me a wild-eyed 9-year-old who could not wait to get on the field named after my granddaddy, Spanky Bruce, for opening day of city league baseball. As a kid, opening day of baseball was a lot like Christmas, but 10 times better.

After falling to the Winston Academy Patriots Tuesday, 7 - 5, the Raiders were looking to bounce back in a rematch with their conference foe Wednesday night at home. Only starting 1-4 in District 2-AA, the Raiders were looking to show that they belong in the playoff conversation.

Henderson’s walk-off hit lifts Bulldogs

STARKVILLE — Demarcus Henderson had a paper due at midnight.
The Mississippi State senior outfielder made sure he had enough time to perfect it and turn it in on time.
Henderson had a walk-off single to score Zack Randolph from second base as the No. 16 Bulldogs beat Southeast Missouri 3-2 Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field.
"I really didn't think he was going to score, but when (the outfielder) booted it, I was kind of happy because that gave him a little more time," Henderson said.
Henderson finished the night with two hits.

MSU defeats USM in WNIT to advance

Jerica James was making basketball plays all over the court when the Mississippi State Bulldogs needed them the most against Southern Mississippi Monday night.
She started it on defense with a key block of Gillom Trophy winner Jamierra Faulkner of the Golden Eagles with 24 seconds remaining in the first overtime and the Bulldogs holding a slim 65-64 advantage.
In the second overtime, James hit a big 3-point field goal to increase a two-point lead by MSU to 70-65.
