Oak Hill blanks Hartfield 31-0

On a beautiful August evening in front of a standing-room only home crowd, Oak Hill kicked off its season in fine fashion.

Oak Hill’s sophomore Drew Riley and junior Drake Riley were workhorses for the Raiders in their 31-0 win over Hartfield Academy on Friday night.

Sharp and Bolton too much: Victory beats Hebron with two second half touchdowns

PHEBA – Victory Christian’s junior running backs Anthony Sharp and Cody Bolton were the one-two punch that the Victory Eagles needed to top Hebron Christian 26-14 on Friday night in Pheba.

After the Victory defense held Hebron on a fourth down conversion attempt at Hebron’s own 36-yard line, Sharp found the end zone in the third quarter on an 18-yard scamper following an 18-yard gain by Bolton to give Victory their first lead of the game on a two-play drive. The lead change came at the 2:41 mark and put Victory up 18-14 in the third period.

Athletes no longer squeaky clean stars

Major problems have been arising in the major sport leagues. It seems more illegal activity has been reported in the past four months than since the start of organized sports.

One of today’s biggest problems in the sporting world seems to be with athletes who need an extra “boost” to help improve their game.

Oak Hill looking to jump start season with win over Hartfield

Last season, Drake Riley was the good to fullback for Oak Hill racking up 625 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns rushing.

This fall, Riley hopes to continue the progress he made in his sophomore season with another break-out season.

"I am definitely looking to beat it," Riley said about his stats from last season. "I always want to do better than I did the year before."

O-line key for Eagle offense in 2013

The offensive line may not get the common, individual offensive stats and big, bold headlines that skill position players get on a daily basis, but for the Hebron Christian offensive linemen knowing they were the one's leading the way brings satisfaction.

"Sunday morning when I look into the paper and I see our team had a good running game, I take pride in that," ­Hebron Christian offensive guard and defensive tackle Troy Arnold said. "People that know football know when you have a successful running game — it starts with the offensive line."

FUTBOL TO FOOTBALL: Gordon makes transition from pitch to gridiron

PHEBA –– Harvey Gordon Sr., really never expected his son, Justin Gordon, to switch from kicking a round soccer ball to carrying an egg-shaped pigskin, but for Harvey futbal and football are the same thing now.

“I will tell you. What a child is going to do is never known till the time comes around for them to do it,” Harvey said with a laugh about Justin’s excursion into the world of eight-man football. “Soccer and football is football now, if you know what I am saying.”

Louisville throws four touchdowns to beat West Point 35-14

STARKVILLE — Wyatt Roberts with four touchdown passes proved why Saturday afternoon the Louisville Wildcats are tabbed by many to contend for a MHSAA
3-A state title this fall as the Wildcats defeated 5-A favorite West Point, 35-14.

The 6-foot, 200-pound senior quarterback went nine of 13 for 257 yards as the Wildcats air attack raided the West Point secondary during the two-quarter scrimmage at Mississippi State University’s Davis Wade Stadium– a part of the New Hope High School jamboree.

Gridiron action gets under way: Oak Hill takes on Pickens Academy tonight

The Oak Hill Raiders will take the field tonight against the Pickens Academy Pirates in Carrollton, Al, slated to start at 6:30 p.m.

The Raiders are looking confident in their early fall practices and are ready to actually hit somebody else other than their teammates said Oak Hill head coach Daniel Merchant. According to Merchant, Pickens Academy were the 2012 runner-ups in the Alabama Independent Schools Association single-A classification and will have a very strong football team.

New Coach, Familiar Face

Roger Burton will tell you that he bleeds green-and-white and there is no one doubting that answer.

After two years away from West Point High School, Burton returned to the Green Wave football program, hoping to continue the success he experienced during his earlier three-year stint between 2008 and 2011. Burton is a familiar name, a familiar face and a coach that many of the West Point players and coaching staff have known prior to this season.
