Oak Hill Junior High teams dominate at district tourney.

Oak Hill’s Junior High squads battled it out at the district tournament in Louisville at Winston Academy on Thursday night, playing Canton. The boys won 60-21, and the girls dominated, winninng 49-31. To the left, Drew Riley throws up a shot against a defender, and on the right, Mikalya Poindexter dribbles the ball down the court for the Lady Raiders. West Point boys out-hustle Saltillo 80-59

The atmosphere in the West Point High School gym was pure electric on Senior night as five West Point Green Wave players were recognized for their contribution to the West Point basketball program.
The opponent for Senior Night was district-foe, the Saltillo Tigers. In the previous contest between West Point and Saltillo, the Tigers got the better of the Wave 72-59 in Saltillo. This time around Head Coach Brad Cox and his squad hoped to return the favor.

Wave seniors to hit regular season home court one last time

The West Point Green Wave will play their final regular-season home game tonight against the Saltillo Tigers. Not only is tonight’s game the last home game, it will also be senior night for the Green Wave.
The West Point basketball team will recognize five seniors for their involvement on the team. The five players being honored are Peair Howard, Lyndon Johnson, Emmanuel Moore, Justin Hosey, and Jamar Nance.

OHA seniors gearing up against Carroll Academy tonight

Though the Raiders are out of district play until next week, head coach Brian Middleton and his Oak Hill team is setting to tune up against Carroll Academy.
On Tuesday night, the Raiders took a gritty road win over Lamar School 42-39 as they were looking to bounce back after two weekend losses against North Delta and Canton Academy. It was a tough, well-earned win as Oak Hill needed a pick up before the start of district tournament.

Lady Wave falls to New Hope in district heartbreaker

After an 81-35 loss in district against Oxford on Friday night, the West Point Lady Wave used the past couple of days for reflection and cleaning up mistakes. On Sunday afternoon, head coach Kendall Pickens and the Lady Wave attended the Mississippi State-Ole Miss women’s basketball game and took in the collegiate action taking away valuable lessons to apply to their individual and team play.
Tuesday night West Point played absolutely great and gave the New Hope Lady Trojans everything and more.

Lady Raiders deliver in final road games

Stan Hughey’s squad is back on track. After pulling off their fourth straight win Tuesday night, this time a 65-49 contest over Lamar in Meridian, the Lady Raiders look primed and ready for a run at the district and state title. Oak Hill used a high scoring first half to pull away early from the fifth-ranked Raiderettes and hold them at bay despite a 24-point performance from Olivia Mabry. The Lady Raiders stuck with their identity of balanced scoring, which is almost always a winning recipe for this team.

West Point falls to New Hope 64-54

It can be difficult to get a win on the road. That statement is even more true in district 2 5-A boys competition as only one team has been able to pick up a win outside of their home gym.
The Green Wave entered into hostile territory Tuesday night to take on district-rival New Hope. In the previous meeting, West Point was able use a thrilling comeback to defeat the Trojans 67-63 at home.

Resurgence of Braves fans about to emerge

With Spring Training just weeks away, I can’t be picked on too much for writing a baseball column.
Some might raise issue since we haven’t gotten the Super Bowl played, but since there are no southern teams involved in that game, I’ll take the liberty of skipping ahead to the diamond.
I don’t know how much our Clay County readers have been paying attention to the offseason, but some pretty special things have happened to one of our southern baseball teams.
That would be the Atlanta Braves.

Lady Raiders win two over weekend

Stan Hughey’s squad continued their winning ways this past weekend with two convincing wins over Canton Academy and North Delta. The Lady Raiders beat the Lady Panthers 58-22 and the Lady Green Wave 46-34.

Hebron’s Nichols playing hard at Southern Arkansas

Tori Nichols towered over many of her opponents at a dominant 6’3” during her time at Hebron Christian, not only height-wise, but talent-wise. Last year, Nichols and her fellow Lady Eagles made a deep run into the MAIS postseason and made it to the State All-Around in Clinton before being eliminated.
