Former longtime West Point residents James Lewis and Bennie Faye Keller, celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in their home in Collinsville, March 7, with family and friends. Captain Keller retired from the Mississippi Army National Guard in West Point, after more than 22 years of service and can also be remembered from Keller Construction Company, which he ran for many years in the local area. Walker: The sequester is here

March 7, 2013

A few weeks back, we discussed how thousands of jobs, mostly those in the areas of defense and military, would be cut as of March 1 if no deal was reached to avoid the cuts.
Last Friday, these cuts went into effect and were signed into law by our President. Nearly $1.2 trillion dollars of cuts----over 750,000 jobs----all cut over night. Not only were defense employees, budgets, and the military cut back, but so also were thousands of dollars in grant programs, which will affect many of our colleges and universities across the nation.

Kansas City, Toronto might just complete the list

I have not been watching Major League Baseball as long as some folks who are around.
That is when you put it into perspective.
I’ve been watching it die-hard since the 1990s, and that seems like a long time to me.
However, there are those who around who remember the Braves when they were in Milwaukee, and there are those who remember a respectable Mets franchise; well maybe we won’t go that far.
The point is that during my life, and during my baseball fandom, there are teams that I have never seen in October.

Donna Summerall: Busy, busy, busy

March 2, 2013

I have to be totally honest and say that sometimes I’m at a loss for something to do. It doesn’t happen often, or not often enough. This week was not one. I spent almost every morning at the high school taking pictures of the kids for the anti-bullying campaign. I thought it was a great way to make kids think about how they treat one another. I was very pleased that Principal Mario Willis asked me to come and was so gracious in helping me find the right kids. I had a good time with students.
