Oak Hill falls, honors senior class

The game was almost over before it even started.
Canton Academy scored eight runs in the first inning, and Melanie Crum blanked the Oak Hill Lady Raiders (2-18) inside the pitching circle as the Lady Panthers won their ninth game in three innings, 16-0, Monday at Kim Keller Field in West Point.
“We have done surprisingly well this season,” Canton Head Coach Lance Anderson said. “We only returned three starters and had little experience. I am very impressed that we have come out with nine wins this season.”

James Lamar Powers, age 77, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at Specialty Hospital of Meridian.

Jeff McCarter, age 88, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at his home in Sturgis.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. at Union Chapel Church in Crawford. The body will lie in state from noon until service time. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Hannah, age 82, of West Point, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date by Calvert Funeral Home.
Calvert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elvie Corrine Brown, age 91, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept.18, 2014, at Progress Street Church of God, with Elder Joe Will Brown officiating. Burial will follow in West Point Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is 3 – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

MDOT urges child seat safety

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is trying to educate citizens on the importance of appropriate child restraint this week during Child Passenger Safety Week.
According to a release from MDOT, motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children ages 1 to 13, and it’s critical that parents use age- and size-appropriate child restraints to reduce these deaths.

MSA plans first ever Makin' Hay festival

Residents who have lamented losing the local farmer’s market for the season have something to look forward to next month. The local Main Street Association (MSA) will host the city’s first-ever Makin’ Hay festival from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 18 at Sally Kate Winters Park in West Point.

Local man charged in shooting

A West Point man was charged with aggravated domestic violence after an alleged weekend shooting.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said officers responded to a domestic disturbance call about 1:40 a.m. Sunday at a residence on South Eshman Avenue.
According to the incident report, 911 dispatch contacted first responders to report that at least one person involved in the alleged altercation had a gun in his possession, and at least one person had been shot.

Geneva Spruill, age 83, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Shearer-Richardson Nursing Home in Okolona.
She was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Webster County to the late Florence Mixon and Travis Stone.
Services are Thursday Sept. 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Robinson Chapel with Bro. Frank Breaux and Bro. Stan Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Webster Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Chris Fox, Ryan Bokin, Patrick Culley, Keith Bagwell, Parker Stanford, Marc McClure.
Visitation is 10 – 11 a.m. Thursday Sept. 18, 2014, at Robinson Funeral Home.

Lorine Hoskins, age 88, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center, West Point.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel, with Rev. Quincy Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in OddFellows Cemetery in Aberdeen.
Visitation is from 3 – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
