City eyes development code changes

The West Point Board of Selectmen will host a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. Friday at City Hall for a public hearing concerning an amendment to the city’s development code, as well as readdressing insurance changes for city employees.
The proposed text amendment to the West Point Development Code would allow funeral homes and service stations to build in zones designated for agricultural development as a major conditional use.

Christmas comes for animal shelter

Christmas certainly came early to the West Point Clay County Animal Shelter and Golden Triangle Horse Rescue this year.
Buck Simmons, a former resident of West Point who now lives in Shannon, paid a visit to Frank Portera, president of the West Point Clay County Animal Shelter, Dec. 16 and presented him with a check for $10,000, with $2,000 allocated to the Golden Triangle Horse Rescue and $8,000 for the WPCCAS.

Two more arrested in shooting

West Point Police Department officers have made additional arrests in a weekend shooting incident that left two injured.
Accordiing to a WPPD statement to media, police arrested Jarvis Shamar Robertson, 10, and Jerri Tyshawn Collins, 18, both of West Point, Monday after both turned themselves over to police in connection with an assault at Point Place Apartments on North Forest Street in West Point.

Thomas Edward Landon Sr.

Thomas Edward Landon, Sr., was born on July 7, 1947 to the late Harrison and Elizabeth Landon in West Point, MS. He died on December 25, 2014 at the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Memphis, TN. He served in the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart Medal during combat in the Vietnam War.

Coach Stan Hughey

Coach Stan Hughey, age 55, passed away Dec. 28, 2014, at his residence in West Point. Coach Hughey was born Sept. 2, 1959, in Ripley, the son of Willa Dean Hodges Hughey and the late William Crandle Hughey. Stan graduated from Bay Springs High School in 1978. He also graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Mississippi State University in 1983. Coach Hughey began his coaching career at Mathiston High School, which later became, what we know today as East Webster High School. Coach Hughey, then became a Graduate Assistant at Mississippi College, studying under Coach Mike Jones.

Fred Dreher Jr.

Fred Dreher, Jr., 87, passed away on December 26, 2014, at Dugan Memorial Home in West Point. Mr. Fred was born February 19, 1927, in Stuttgart, Arkansas, the son of the late Frederic Nicholas and Regina Anna Hageman Dreher, Sr. He was an United States Navy Veteran. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus. He worked as a Civilan Chief Budget Officer for the Columbus Air Force Base for 35 years. He married Phyllis Jean Parks May 31, 1947, in El Dorado, Arkansas, and she passed away June 8, 2013.

Billy Joe Dye

Billy Joe Dye, age 63, passed away on December 29, 2014, at his residence in West Point. Mr. Billy Joe was born March 3, 1951, in West Point, the son of the late Hiram Hilliard “Pete” and Roe Alma Higginbotham Dye. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Forrestry. He was a Forrester with Seitz Lumber Company in West Point. He also owned and operated Wildland Timber Management. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt, fish, and camp. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in West Point.

Officials stressing New Year’s safety

The stress of Christmas shopping has passed, and many citizens may now look to cut loose and blow off some steam on New Year’s Eve. Local officials urge residents to take proper care during the holiday, and be as safe as possible while enjoying themselves.
Fireworks are one of the time-tested traditions of New Year’s, though West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said discharging fireworks is illegal inside the city limits.

Ruben Moore, Jr. age 82, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Funeral services are Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at Pisgah M.B. Church at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to funeral service. Burial will follow in the Lee Hill Cemetery.
