County Receives Federal Declaration For Public Assistance

Clay County was included Wednesday evening with the 36 Mississippi counties that were given a federal declaration for public assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA.)
The declaration for public assistance comes just one week after the county was given a federal declaration for individual assistance to residents whose homes, businesses and other property were destroyed in last month's flooding and EF3 tornado.

Janice Ann Pittman, age 67, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at her home.
Funeral services are Friday, May 13, 2011, at noon from Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel, with Bro. Mike Mathena officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, from 2 – 5 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Board Enters Into Mutual Aid Disaster Agreement

The West Point Board of Mayor and Selectmen adopted a mutual aid agreement Tuesday that would allow the city to offer assistance to residents affected by disasters, such as tornadoes or floods.
Since Clay County was given a federal disaster declaration Monday, residents affected by the recent tornado are eligible to receive individual assistance for housing, home repairs and other disaster-related expenses not paid for by the homeowner's insurance or another assistance programs.

Harold Lathon, who was appointed to the North Central Mississippi Railroad Authority Board in January, was removed from the position temporarily Tuesday night by the West Point Board of Mayor and Selectmen.

Robbie and Linda Koch, owners of Coon Tattoo and Body Piercing, knew that the people of Clay County in Montpelier and surrounding areas needed help. The idea of giving of their time, talents, days off, and money didn't make them back down an inch from the daunting task they conceived of to help those in need. In one week they had gotten the word out via Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and word of mouth that they would be taking donations at their shop and doing small tattoos with the proceeds going toward our Clay County neighbors.

John Ruble Sanders Sr., age 85, passed away, Sunday, May 8, 2011, at his home in West Point, Miss.
John Ruble Sanders Sr. was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Chickasaw County, Miss., to the late Daisy Clark Sanders and Frank Sanders. He was a supervisor and later an "A Fitter" for Babcock and Wilcox Company for 30 years,

Hallmark Named Columbus High School Principal

Scott Hallmark, current associate principal of West Point High School's north campus, was hired Monday evening as principal for Columbus High School where he will begin July 1.
Hallmark, who holds a masters degree in Educational Leadership from Delta State University, worked for the West Point School District for 12 years and worked as an administrator for the district seven years.
