Lady Wave to face two teams on Saturday

The West Point Green Wave girls basketball team lost three seniors last season, but they will return in 2010-2011 with a good bit of depth and experience. They will get their first taste of live action ball this Saturday at the West Oktibbeha Jamboree.
“We have a lot of the same players returning,” said West Point girls basketball coach Jessye Anne Helms. “We did lose some post players.”
Helms says that those players will be replaced with a mixture of returning players and a pair of transfers who will start as well.

Playoffs, district title in reach for Raiders

It’s all come down to this week for the Oak Hill Academy Raiders (3-7; 1-1). The team that started the season off with four straight losses found itself back in the playoff hunt after game six, only to suffer a devastating loss to Manchester three weeks ago.
With one game left to go, this is as important as they come. The Raiders will be facing district rivals Winston Academy (5-4; 2-0).

Green Wave head back to the Delta to take on Clarksdale in district match

The West Point Green Wave (8-1; 5-0) football team is going to have to finish out the regular season on the road. Before going to Hernando for the final week’s game, the Wave will be in the heart of the Delta, playing Clarksdale (4-5; 2-3) this Friday night.
The Green Wave are undefeated in district play going into this week’s game. They will be trying to lock down a district title in the next couple of weeks.

Eagles to finish 2010 against Winona

The Hebron Christain Eagles (2-8; 0-2) are coming off of an exciting win over Calhoun Academy.
Dropping down to eight-man football for the first time last Friday night, the Eagles managed to slip by the experienced eight-man crew of Calhoun 38-30.
This week, the team will be going back to their normal numbers on the field, as they get set to finish out the 2010 season against Winona Academy (7-2; 2-0).

A Good Night For Soccer

Monday evening’s weather was pleasant, as youth from around the area gathered to start another week of soccer at the West Point Sportsplex.

Evie Virginia "Gin" Webb

Evie Virginia "Gin" Webb, age 88, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at the Dugan Memorial Home in West Point.
She was born July 12, 1922, in Cathage to Ruby Octavia Garnett Webb and Dr. Robert Marvin Webb. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus.
Graveside services are today, Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Oregon Memorial Cemetery near Lexington with Bro. W.E. "Buck" Buchanan officiating. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
She leaves no immediate survivors.

Mattye Mildred Rodgers

Mattye Mildred Rodgers, age 82, of West Point, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Rodgers was born on Oct. 25, 1927, in Kilmichael, to the late John A. Watson and Hattie Bell Donahoo. Mrs. Rodgers was a member of West Point First Baptist Church.

Youth Soccer Continues At Sportsplex

The second week of Youth Soccer is completed on Thursday night, with the 8-9 year-old teams playing the late games at the West Point Parks and Recreation Sportsplex. More youth soccer and football is to come this week.

Friday should prove big for area teams

This Friday night is going to be a big night for our area football teams. West Point will be trying to bring home another district title, Oak Hill will be vying for a playoff spot, and though Hebron has been knocked out of the post-season run, they will be hosting Winona for a district game on the Eagles’ senior night.
The Green Wave (8-1; 5-0) are coming off a big 49-0 win over Saltillo, and they are still undefeated in district play. The Tigers were West Point’s latest victims during the Green Wave senior night on Friday.
