Jannie Davis of West Point is pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of her niece, Octavia G. Scott, niece of the late Joseph Davis, to Johnny L. Dent, son of Betty Wilson of West Point and the late Ricky Wilson.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Rev. Alfred and Lula Gage.
She is a 1992 graduate of West Point High School and is a 2006 graduate of East Mississippi Community College in Mayhew with an Associates Degree in Medical Office Technology.
She is currently employed with H&R Block.

West Point teams eliminated

The 10U boys all-stars World Series dreams came to an end Saturday after they fell to Saltillo, 10-3 meanwhile here at home the 12U girls fell to Louisville 19-13.

"We made to many mistakes running the basepads and too many throwing errors," head coach Keith Holton said. The girls found themselves trailing 10-1 in the third inning before mounting a comeback.

The 12U boys were also eliminated after falling to Clinton.

Just four all-star teams representing West Point remain in their respective tournaments heading into day three of the Dizzy Dean finals.

West Point 12U All-Stars rally for victory

West Point had just two hits in the sixth inning, but four runs was enough cushion to a first round victory in front of their home crowd Thursday night, topping Saltillo 15-12 in the 12U girls Dizzy Dean State Tournament at the Jesse W. Harmon Sports Complex.

"They're a scrappy bunch," head coach Keith Holton said. "If we're going to win, we're going to battle to the end. We don't have that shutdown pitcher that can hold them to one or two runs. Saltillo gave us everything we could handle."

King David Watkins Sr., age 84, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011, in Macon, Ga.
Funeral services are Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 3 p.m. from St. Robertson M.B. Church, with the Rev. Elbert Lee officiating. Burial will follow in St. Robertson M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is today, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Green Wave continue summer camps

Several players from the West Point High School football team traveled to Scooba last week for a three-day lineman camp hosted by East Mississippi Community College.
The Green Wave have been keeping busy all summer lifting weights and doing drills in preparation for another title defense. Head coach Chris Chambless said it’s all about repetition.
“Your practicing three times a day, an hour and a half to two hours,” he explained. “That includes a lot of drill work, conditioning and lifting weights. They got worked pretty hard.”

Former Oak Hill standout Bohon inks with William Carey

With one swing, Mitch Bohon could do some damage.
At 6’2 210-pounds, the sophomore first baseman followed up his stellar freshman campaign with an even better second year at East Mississippi Community College.
It was enough to have four-year colleges calling, but in the end Bohon this month decided to join William Carey University in Hattiesburg.
A product of Oak Hill Academy, Bohon quickly made a good first impression, batting .311 while leading the EMCC Lions with seven home runs, 12 doubles and 33 RBI.

Silver Lee Johnson, age 74, passed away Friday, July 1, 2011, at her home.
Funeral services are Friday, July 8, 2011, at 1 p.m. from Living Manna Church, with the Rev. R.H. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.

West Point All-Stars eye a trip to Southaven on the diamond

The 2011 Dixie Youth All-Star tournaments kick-off Thursday for all West Point area teams. The boys and girls look to get a few wins over the next four days, all eying a trip to Southaven for the World Series.

Although weather has put a damper on a handful of practices for the girls, head coach Ken Wright feels that won’t have to much of an effect on the team.
“We haven’t had as many practices as we would have liked,” he said. “But I feel pretty good about our team.”

Oak Hill closes out summer sessions on the court

The Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders have had a productive summer in 2011. Coming off a 27-11 campaign which included a trip to the overall state championships last spring, head coach Stan Hughey and the girls have been going non-stop.
“We closed out the summer with a camp at Jackson Academy and two weeks ago we were at an MSU camp and we’ve been playing a little city league” he said. “We’re going to practice with the junior high a little bit and get the high school in the weight room next week. We’ve had a busy summer.”
