Road warriors

October 21, 2011

To get where he wants his team to be, West Point head football coach Chris Chambless knows his team has to check off certain goals first.

So, in order to be the last team standing in Jackson with a third straight state championship in December, Chambless believes his West Point Green Wave have to take care of their division first, which means winning a third straight Division 1-5A championship.

The Wave (5-3 overall, 4-0 in division) can take a big step toward that goal tonight, when they travel to face Center Hill (4-4, 3-1) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

West Point Green Wave suiting up in all-star games

October 21, 2011

With three games left in the regular season and playoffs just around the corner, West Point has it’s eyes set on a third straight state title.
But already a few players have gotten post-season honors.

High school coaches from across the state met Wednesday in Clinton and selected five Green Wave to take part in a pair of all-star games.
Offensive lineman Romia Wilson and linebacker Brandon Edwards were selected to represent Mississippi in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic set to play Dec. 10 in Montgomery, Alabama.

Raiders hit the road in non-district play

October 21, 2011

Oak Hill returns to the field tonight after a much needed week off from competition. The Raiders move out of district play and travel to Grenada to face Kirk Academy.

“The break definitely helped us,” head coach Benjie Merchant said. “It gave us a chance to get the ninth graders acclimated to our system so they’ll be ready to go.”

The JV season ended several weeks ago so now they will be eligible to play varsity football for the last two games of the season. The move will no doubt add a little more depth and some speed to some key areas on the team.

New coach, same attitude for Lady Eagles

October 20, 2011

William Cotton just can’t wait to get on the floor this season.
The first year head girls basketball coach is returning to the sport after an 11-year absence. It’s going to be a battle right out of the gates.

“We’re ready to play, “ he said. “We’re ready for a ball game.”
The Lady Eagles will have their hands full in the season opener, the winner of North Sunflower and Starkville Christian next Wednesday at the Winona Christian Invitational. If they win, they could meet reigning MAIS Single A champion Delta the following day. That’s just the first test.

Expectations are high for Oak Hill in 2011

October 19, 2011

Expectations are high once again for the Lady Raiders at Oak Hill Academy.

When you finish third in the state and win back-to-back district titles, the only thing left to do is bring home a state championship.

“Our expectations year in and year out for quite awhile have been the same,” head coach Stan Hughey said. “We want to win a gold ball. There’s never been a championship team in girls basketball even though there’s been a lot of good teams. We want to win the state and that’s what we shoot for.”

Refuge Student Ministries to host flag football tournament for projects

October 19, 2011

What better way to bring a community together than through sports.
Saturday, the Refuge Student Ministries will team up with Tyson Lee, former Mississippi State quarterback, for the inaugural Tyson Lee Flag Football tournament.

All proceeds raised for the 7-on-7 match ups will go towards the student ministries to help with their goals.

“It will help local and non-local service projects, worship retreats and just anything that would help with their curriculum,” Student Minister Corbin Coker said.
