James L. ‘Big Jim’ Walker

James L. ‘Big Jim’ Walker, age 82, of Carthage passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, in Jackson.
He was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Cave-in-Rock, Iii., to the late Nina Wigginton and Charles Clarence Walker. He was a tube mill operator for Blazon Flexible Flyer in West Point. He resided in West Point about 40 years then moved to Carthage. He married Melita Mae Shipp Walker who preceded him in death March 8, 1991.

Bertha Lee Brown, age 82, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, in St. Louis, Mo.
Funeral services are Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at 11 a.m. from Third Mt. Olive M.B. Church, with the Rev. Al Lathan officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Natasha Ann Cox, age 32, passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at her home.
Funeral services are Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at 3 p.m. from Northside Christian Church, with the Rev. Orlando Richmond Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.

High schools return to the court Friday, with several playing in key district contests.

Oak Hill
The Lady Raiders, 17-5, bounced back from their fifth loss of the season with a pair of victories over Indianola and Marshall earlier this week as they prepare to return to Class 2AA action this weekend.

“We played good perimeter defense,” head coach Stan Hughey said after the 45-32 win over Marshall. “We had talked about can we duplicate what we did against Indianola. And we did better.”

Eagles sweep district foe Macon Central

Since suffering a pair of losses at home to Kemper Academy, both the Eagles and Lady Eagles have gotten back in the win column with victories over Macon Central.

Tuesday, the Lady Eagles had a another solid defensive effort in 52-20 win, while the Eagles held off the Vikings, 54-20.

Hebron (14-7, 3-1) shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half and grabbed a 15-4 lead after the first quarter. The girls continued to dominate in the second, while their defense remained solid. The girls led 33-8 at the break.

Oak Hill splits a pair with Marshall

HOLLY SPRINGS- A 15-point third quarter by Oak Hill helped the Lady Raiders grab another victory Tuesday night, 45-32 over Marshall.

The game could have gone either way early on, both teams refusing to relinquish any big lead, but Oak Hill, (17-5) had a slight 12-10 advantage at the half.

The second quarter was more of same for the Lady Raiders, by halftime they led 22-19.

“We played good perimeter defense,” head coach Stan Hughey said. “We had talked about can we duplicate what we did against Indianola. And we did better.”

Oxford sweeps West Point at home

West Point knew ahead of time that the Oxford game would be huge, especially at home.

Fresh off a loss to New Hope, the visiting Chargers didn't want to get behind the eight ball early in district play and on Tuesday night, pulled out a tough road win over the Green Wave 58-42.

The Green Wave, (7-11, 1-1) already with a district victory over Saltillo, went toe-to-toe with the Chargers for three quarters. Down three with 2:57 left to play, Oxford closed out the third quarter on a 6-0 run to end it, and was able to carry over that momentum into the fourth.

Elizabeth Clark Ming, age 88, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center of West Point. Mary Elizabeth Clark Ming was born March 2, 1923, in Chickasaw County, to the late Jennie Bell Griffin and David Loyce Berry, She was a homemaker.
Graveside funeral services are Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at 10 a.m. in Memorial Garden Cemetery in West Point, with the Rev. Harold Robinson, officiating. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home for procession to the graveside. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Davis Carothers, age 101, passed away Monday Jan. 9, 2012, at her residence. She was born March 13, 1910, in Okolona to the late Mary Carpenter and James Davis. She was a retired school teacher and a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime member of Jr. Auxiliary and a director for teen town for several years.
