Matt Bryant kicked a 51-yard field goal on the final play of regulation, then booted a 52-yarder in overtime to give the Atlanta Falcons a 37-34 victory over the New Orleans Saints. In another thriller between the NFC South rivals Sunday, Matt Ryan threw for a franchise-record 448 yards, leading the Falcons to just their fourth victory over the Saints in the last 17 meetings. This one was particularly sweet for Atlanta, which is coming off a miserable 4-12 season--its first losing campaign since 2007.

'Voice of the Bulldogs' Jack Cristil dies at 88

STARKVILLE — Jacob Sanford "Jack" Cristil, the beloved former sports broadcaster of six decades of Mississippi State University athletics, died Sunday [Sept. 7] at the age of 88 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo of complications from kidney disease and cancer after an extended illness. Cristil, who served MSU from 1953 to 2011, was known throughout the South as "the Voice of the Bulldogs."

OzLand' screening a success

A theater full of people took a trip to "OzLand" Thursday night at the Malco Theater in Columbus. The film, written and directed by West Point native Michael Williams, was unveiled for the first time to the public at a sold-out screening.
Viewers arrived an hour prior to the showing to peruse "OzLand" merchandise, chat with the cast and crew and have their pictures made on the "red carpet."

WP to get new shopping center

Residents traveling to Walmart may have noticed dirt work in a lot in front of the building during the past couple weeks. The work is part of the early stages of bringing a new shopping center to West Point.
Jim Khalaf, owner of Khalaf Plaza LLC in McComb, said the shopping center will be designed to hold between five and seven stores, depending on the size each store needs. He said the center will be called Khalaf Plaza West Point.

Hebron Eagles face familiar foe tonight

PHEBA — Hebron Christian will line up against familiar foes in its third game of the season tonight. The Eagles will square off against the defending MAIS 8-man state champions, the Sharkey-Issequena Confederates, at 7 p.m. tonight in Rolling Fork.
The Eagles and the Confederates played two games together last season, both ending with Sharkey-Issequena as the victors. In those two games, the last meeting being the 2013 8-man North State championship game, the Confederates have blanked the Eagles by a combined score of 74-0.

Wave, Jackets meet in rivalry game

Jaime Mitchell, the Starkville Yellow Jackets’ head coach, said the best games he has been a part of in his five-year tenure with the black and gold have come against the West Point Green Wave.
“You can bank on West Point being ready to play us,” Mitchell said. “The Starkville and West Point game will always give you your money’s worth. They are the toughest and most physical football team we will play all year. We are certainly going to have our work cut out for us.”
There is good reason that is the case.

Mary Lee Rish

Mary Lee Rish, age 82, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, in Gilmore Hospital in Amory.
She was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Chickasaw County, to the late Margaret Awtrey and Robert E. Huffman Sr. She was a beautician for 60 years and a member of Siloam Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Friday Sept. 5, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Robinson Chapel with Rev. Peyton Myers and Rev. Doran Henry officiating. Burial will follow in West Point Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Wayne Hindman, Glenn Hindman, Keith Hindman, Tres Turner, Austin White, Drew White, Lee M. Huffman, Danny Huffman.

Supervisors vote down drug court

The Clay County Board of Supervisors voted not to financially support the county’s misdemeanor drug court at its meeting Thursday. The board originally voted to cut funding for the drug court in June due to lack of available funds.
