Clay County prosecutor formally resigns

January 29, 2013

It will be quite a busy election year for the Clay County Election Commission, who has already presided over one special election this month and who expects to preside over two more special elections later this year.
One of those special elections will fall in November and will be held to fill the vacant seat of Clay County prosecuting attorney.

Thomas “Stump” Foreman

Funeral services for Mr. Thomas “Stump” Foreman, age 82, of Macon, were held Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Interment followed in Salem Cemetery. Anna Dell Edwards McCary

January 28, 2013

Anna Dell Edwards McCary, age 88, passed away, on Monday, January 28, 2013, at West Point Community Living Center, in West Point. Mrs. McCary was born November 2, 1924, in Crawford, Miss., to the late Eva Upton and John Edwards. She was a Homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church. Anna Dell Edwards McCary married Harry Lester McCary April 25, 1940, who preceded her in death on June 1, 1998.

West Point seniors recognize influences

West Point Green Wave basketball head coach Brad Cox asked his senior basketball players to select a West Point High School teacher that had made an impact in their life. The teachers selected by the players wore the jersey of that player on Friday during the school day and were recognized during halftime of the district home game against Oxford Friday night January 25.

Food for local families

Elliot Hutchins holds up the first cans from the first load delivered to the Daily Times Leader on Saturday. The canned goods will go to the Project Homestead Food Pantry which feeds over 800 people in Clay County each month. Elliot asked that canned goods be donated this year instead of presents for his seventh birthday. Cans can be dropped off at a number of locations, including the Daily Times Leader. Lady Raiders win two over weekend

Stan Hughey’s squad continued their winning ways this past weekend with two convincing wins over Canton Academy and North Delta. The Lady Raiders beat the Lady Panthers 58-22 and the Lady Green Wave 46-34.

Hebron’s Nichols playing hard at Southern Arkansas

Tori Nichols towered over many of her opponents at a dominant 6’3” during her time at Hebron Christian, not only height-wise, but talent-wise. Last year, Nichols and her fellow Lady Eagles made a deep run into the MAIS postseason and made it to the State All-Around in Clinton before being eliminated.

Raiders fall twice over weekend

Sometimes it takes a little luck when it comes to winning basketball games. After winning three of their previous four games, the Raiders dropped two contests over the weekend in a 48-53 home loss to Canton and 47-56 on the road to North Delta, continuing Oak Hill’s streak of very close losses. The second loss to the Panthers will place the Raiders in the third seed of the district tournament to face Winston in a go-home game.

Gov. sets special election date for District 36 seat

January 28, 2013

Gov. Phil Bryant on Monday issued a Writ of Election for Mississippi House District 36, setting March 12, 2013, as the election date to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Rep. David Gibbs.
The qualifying deadline for candidates is Feb. 11, 2013.
If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast in the special election, a runoff election will be held April 2, 2013.
The election will fill the House seat left vacant after the death of Clay County native David Gibbs earlier this month.
