Coggins-Davis becomes fifth Clay County native to enter race

The deadline to qualify for the March 12 special election set to fill the vacant seat in House District 36 is fast approaching.
Six candidates have now declared their intent on taking that seat, and five are from Clay County.
The latest to declare is Bobbie Coggins-Davis, who describes herself as family-centered and a servant of the people.

Rep. Chism to speak at breakfast

Mississippi District 39 House Representative Gary Chism will be this week’s guest at the Legislative Breakfast event on Monday.
Last week, the Growth Alliance kicked off the series of speakers who talk informally with Clay County residents at City Hall over breakfast.
Rep. Tyrone Ellis spoke on education and jobs last week, and expect Chism, a Republican from Lowndes County to speak on similar issues.
Chism represents portions of Clay County along with Ellis, a Starkville native.
The event will kick off at about 7:30 a.m. and will run for about an hour.

Funeral services are Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. from St. Paul Beasley C.M.E. Church with the Rev. Willie J. Mays Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Lower Prairie Creek Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Friday, February 8, 2013, fro 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services are Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. from Siloam M.B. Church with the Rev. Robert Shamblin-Traylor officiating. Burial will follow in Siloam M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.

Nina “Faye” Barnes

Nina “Faye” Barnes age 70, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in Columbus.
A celebration of her life will take place tonight, Friday, February 8, 2013, at 6 p.m. at Lighthouse Baptist Church on Old White Road.
She leaves behind two sisters, Renette Gaskin and Debra Caspell, and significant other, Jerome Nolan.

Robinson speaks during Clergy Month

The West Point Civitan Luncheon Club warmly welcomed former Chancery Clerk, Robbie Robinson to speak at Wednesday’s meeting. Robinson was the special guest of Rev. Kelly Unger. Unger shared a bit of early history by telling a story about how his father, Rev. Unger, married the parents of Robbie Robinson. February is Clergy month and Robinson wanted to share a true story of World War II. He is a great lover of history and especially the time during the second world war.

Lady Eagles ready to start district tourney

The Lady Eagle basketball program is coming off a big junior high district tournament this past weekend and hope that the success carries over into this coming weekend.
Hebron Christian is a very young ball club with four starters still in junior high, but under the direction of head coach William Cotton have played great basketball in the month of January. Last week’s junior high tournament championship gave the junior high girls much needed experience playing in a tournament atmosphere.

Eagles to take on Calhoun

Head Coach Gary Vaughn and his Hebron Christian Eagles are chomping at the bit as they are ready to enter into the district 3-A basketball tournament tonight.
Hebron has not played a game in over two weeks and have been really anticipating entering into the tournament. Even though some Eagles fans may be looking ahead to Saturday night, Coach Vaughn knows his team has to take care of Calhoun Academy first understanding how important the game is for seeding.

Oak Hill faces district at Leake

Oak Hill’s Head Coach Brian Middleton knows how important tonight’s game is against Canton Academy as the Raiders have yet to defeat the Cougars this season.
“A big game,” said Coach Middleton during a phone interview Thursday, “a win over Canton puts us one step closer to a district championship.”
