Statement on economic development

April 23, 2013

I do not make it a common practice to editorialize on page one.
The situation regarding speculation of a legislative session involving a potential industrial project in Clay County needs to be addressed.
As of press time on Tuesday, Gov. Phil Bryant remains the only person close to economic development who has commented publicly about such a project existing.
Here is what we know from Bryant’s comments on Monday.

Jail inmate captured within hour of escape

A West Point inmate attempted to escape Monday not once but twice, but his attempt to flee law enforcement officials failed and the offender was led back to jail with a new felony escape charge.

An investigation swiftly got underway Monday morning after the Clay County Head Start received a threatening phone message from an unknown caller claiming to represent a collection agency.

Oak Hill senior Lauren Billington credits school, family and a love for reading for success

When two of Lauren Billington’s older brothers each scored a 31 on their ACT in high school, she knew she was not going to settle for anything less than a 32.
The Oak Hill Academy senior came away from the test with a score of 33.

Mrs. Jean Clardy, Age 58 of West Point, Mississippi, passed away Friday, April 19, 2013 at North MS Medical Center, West Point, MS Funeral Services are incomplete and will be announced later.

Romer S. Carroll

April 20, 2013

Romer S. Carroll, 85, passed away, on Friday, April 19, 2013 at Hermitage Gardens Nursing Home, in Southaven. She was born November 3, 1927 in Clay County Mississippi to the late Myrtle Hodnett and Jesse G. Stafford. Mrs. Carroll was a Customer Service operator for NAPA of Memphis. She was of the Baptist faith. Romer S. Carroll, married Charles Ernest Carroll, Jr. on July 10, 1943, in West Point, MS he preceded her in death on August 22, 2011.

Hebron eliminated from postseason

The Hebron Christian Eagles had their backs against the ropes following an 18-0 rout Tuesday afternoon.
In a win or go home game two, the Eagles needed anything and everything to fall in their favor to defeat the top-ranked Tri-County Academy Thursday afternoon in Flora.
