Oak Hill Academy head football coach Benjie Merchant is getting excited about his first season with the Raiders. Despite the heat during the first week of practice, the players he said, have adjusted well.
“Can’t be more pleased with them,” Merchant said. “They’ve done everything we’ve asked all through the summer up until now.”
The Raiders have been working out twice a day, with a morning workout before putting on the helmets for an hour and half session in the afternoon. Temperatures this week have been in the mid to upper 90’s,
The Hebron Christian Eagles got fall camp underway Monday evening under first year head coach Tri Nason.
Nason, who was promoted to head coach after being an assistant in 2010, said because of the size of the roster right now it may look like the Eagles will have to drop down to eight man football.
"The first day went pretty good," he said. "But we're counting on going to eight-man this season. Practice did look good the first day."
Kathleen Stephenson Hartin
Kathleen Stephenson Hartin, age 87, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Dugan Memorial Home.
Kathleen Stephenson Hartin was born June 4, 1924, in Charleston, W.V., to the late Gladys Rice and Joseph Stephenson. She served in the U.S. Navy in the Waves corp. during WWII. She loved Bowling and golf.
Graveside services are today, Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Dale Funderburg officiating.
She is survived by her sister in-law and brother-in-law, Ann and Buck Harmon.
Shelby Jean Burges
Shelby Jean Burges, age 73, passed away, Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the North Mississippi Medical Center, in Tupelo.
Shelby Jean Burges was born March 15, 1938, in Pine Bluff, Miss., to the late Maudie Marie Vaughn and Raymond Forrester She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Shelby Jean Burges was married to Hubert Eugene Burges, who preceded her on January 31, 1986.
Prentice O. McKibben Sr.
Prentice O. McKibben Sr., age 91, passed away, Sunday, July 24, 2011, at his home, in West Point.
Prentice Owen McKibben Sr. was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Vardaman, Miss., to the late Edna Griffin and Ernest McKibben. He was a new automobile salesman from 1955 until 1990 for Bishop Chevrolet and Larry White Chevrolet and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army having served during WWII. Prentice Owen McKibben, Sr. married Mabel E. Higgins McKibben March 1, 1947, in Hernando, Miss., she preceded him in death March 27, 2002.
James D. "Jay" Brantley
James D. "Jay" Brantley, age 65, passed away, Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the University of Alabama Medical Center, in Birmingham.
James David Brantley was born June 10, 1946, in Kosciusko, Miss., to the late Cora Faye Cupit and J. B. Brantley. He was a truck driver for Bryan Foods for 37 years. James D. "Jay" Brantley
was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. James D. "Jay" Brantley married Beth Elaine Millsaps Brantley July 23, 1967, at Calvary Baptist Church in West Point. He had attended Mississippi State University and Holmes Junior College.

When the Hebron Lady Eagles take the softball field this fall, there might be a few unfamiliar faces.
Just four varsity players return from 2010 to a team filled with seventh and eighth graders who last year shined on the junior varsity squad.
Although the girls had a quiet summer as a unit, head coach Cass Tapley said they have been busy with playing summer ball on travel teams.
Mary Clay Bradshaw
Mary Clay Bradshaw, age 76, passed away July 20, 2011, at North Miss Medical Center-Tupelo.
Visitation will be Monday, July 25, 2011, from 3-6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Service Chapel. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul M.B. Church with the Rev. Eddie Longstreet officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
Castle, Wedel Engagement
Gary and Rita Castle of West Point, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Kimbry MaShae Castle, to Garik Clay Wedel, son of Galen and Sherry Wedel, of West Point.
The bride elect is the granddaughter of the late Wayne and Jane Castle and Faye Milford of North Carrollton, Miss., and the late Vernon Milford.
She is a 2007 graduate of Oak Hill Academy, and attended Itawamba Community College.
She is currently employed with Go Finance, a family owned business.

Gola Mae and Ricky Russell of West Point, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Moneaka Lashella Jones, daughter of the late James Earl Bean, to Jesse James Virgil III, son of Helen Jean Virgil and Jessie James Virgil Jr., of Starkville.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Jessie Russell and Kathleen Bean, of West Point, and the late Sallie V. Jones and the late Ervin Jones.
