Officials advise caution during cold weather

The harshest cold typically waits until January and February to visit Mississippi, and according to weather forecasts, it looks to be arriving today. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures could drop to as low as 10 degrees tonight, with lows remaining around 21 through Friday and the slight possibility of sleet and snow Friday afternoon.
Local officials are advising citizens to take precautions against the cold for the sake of their personal safety and comfort, and also for the sake of their water and electric bills.

Forest’s 31 propels Green Wave to 10 wins

COLUMBUS — The streak rolls on.
Ecurb Forest scored a career-high 31 points, and the West Point Green Wave defeated the West Lowndes Panthers Saturday at the Trojan Classic at New Hope High School in Columbus. The victory extends West Point’s winning streak to six games and 10 wins overall this season.

Ferdinand Sykes Jr., 76, died on Jan. 1, 2015 at Ruleville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ruleville.
Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. today at Carter Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the J.F. Carter Memorial chapel of Carter Funeral Home followed by burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilma Laurene Johnson Wright, 93, passed away on January 3, 2015, at her residence, in the Pine Bluff Community of Clay County. Mrs. Wilma Laurene Johnson Wright was born July 23, 1921, in the Pine Bluff Community of Clay County, the daughter of the late: Charlie Oliver and Mable Eudora Moore Johnson. Mrs. Wilma was a lady who demonstrated strength, substance, wisdom, discernment, and love for her family, church, neighbors and friends. She possessed a strong moral character. Mrs.

Supervisors renew county employees

The Clay County Board of Supervisors voted to rehire all county employees for 2015 at its meeting Monday.
The board is required to go through the process of rehiring each county employee at the first meeting of every year. The rehires included circuit clerk deputies, the tax assessor, purchase clerk, comptroller, justice court clerk and deputies, building maintenance and grounds, sheriff’s deputies, jailers, E911 dispatchers and sanitation workers.

Heavy rains damage Main St.

The past couple weeks have seen some heavy rains throughout the region, and the constant pouring has caused damage to a recently repaired road in West Point.
Residents traveling on East Main Street likely noticed crews working on the sewer lines in the street in front of Sunflower for two and a half months during the summer. The sewer work was completed in August, and the city waited for the dirt to pack in before pouring hot mix asphalt on the road and finishing up the project.
