Oak Hill heads to playoffs

The Oak Hill Raiders (5-5; 2-3 District 2-AA) ended its regular season on a low note with a loss to the Leake Academy Rebels (7-3; 5-0 District 2-AA) 35-0 Friday night on the campus of Oak Hill Academy in West Point on senior night.

Marshall Henry "Sonny" Austin, Jr., 71, passed away, on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at West
Point Community Living Center. He was born October 20, 1942 in Lauderdale County Mississippi to the late Girtie
Barnette Austin and Marshall Henry Austin, Sr. “Sonny” was a Truck Driver and of the Baptist faith. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army having served during the Berlin Crisis.

The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office issued an alert in reference to a recent scam regarding the Black Farmers Discrimination Litigation involving the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The aforementioned litigation was the product of a collective effort on behalf of African-American farmers to memorialize and receive recompense from the alleged discrimination of black farmers by the USDA.

Law enforcement officials urge Halloween safety

As trick-or-treaters flood the streets of West Point and Clay County Thursday night, local law enforcement officials are urging participants to take caution.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said citizens and motorists should be especially careful when traveling to watch for pedestrians, particularly during prime trick-or-treating hours at dusk. Brinkley also urged those making the rounds to go early in the evening, and to travel in groups.

The Oak Hill Raiders (5-4; 2-2 District 2-AA) are wrapping up the regular season against Leake Academy in the last district game at 7 p.m. tonight on the campus of Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
Following a tough 49-14 loss to district opponent Canton Academy on the road, the Raiders are hoping to rebound with a more competitive contest with the Leake Rebels at home.

Hebron takes on Friendship

PHEBA – Hebron Christian (5-3; 3-0 District 7-A) is holding a three-game winning streak and looks to continue the momentum against Friendship Christian Academy in its final non-district home game of the regular season at 7:30 p.m. tonight on the campus of Hebron Christian School.

West Point has trailed at halftime three times during the first four district contests. When losing at halftime, the Green Wave has faced a combined deficit of 64-14 and has lost two of the three games.
That luck changed against Lake Cormorant in week eight as West Point used a major comeback to clinch its second district win, 24-21, after falling behind in the first two quarters, 21-0.

Funeral services are Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. from New Hope M.b. Church in Woodland with Rev. Henry L. Brownlee officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Lenora H. Gathings age 85, passed away Wednesday. Oct. 23, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center of West Point.
Funeral services are Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at noon from St. Mark C.O.G.I.C. with Pastor Norman Jamison Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Gathings Cemetery in Gibson.
Visitation is Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, from 1 – 3 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
