Lady Raiders, Raiders head to Kirk Academy Classic

Oak Hill Academy's basketball teams continue their holiday tournament stretch today in the Kirk Academy 2014 Basketball Classic in Grenada.
The Lady Raiders tip off against the Carroll Academy Lady Rebels at 10:30 a.m. on the campus of Kirk Academy, followed by the boys match-up with Carroll slated for 11:45 a.m. The opening games start a three-game stretch in the classic as Oak Hill will play North Delta School Friday afternoon and DeSoto School Saturday morning.

Simmons retires after 45 years

Mike Simmons has been matching the needs of his clients with the best insurance coverage at affordable prices for 45 years. He began his career at Moseley – White Insurance in 1969. He remained at that office until 1992, when he went to work for Galloway, Chandler, McKinney Insurance. He has now decided the time has come to retire.

Harold Max Colbert

Harold Max Colbert passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at his residence in Cedar Bluff at the age of 81. He was born Aug. 11, 1932, in West Point, MS to the late Harold Lee Colbert and Maxine Holmes. He served 20 years in the US Army and retired as a Lt. Colonel and fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was also into landscaping and cattle farming.

Johnny Lee Gray

Johnny Lee Gray, age 75, died Dec. 21, 2013, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel, with Pastor Mary Gray-Kyle officiating. Burial will follow in the Tibbee Community Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28, one hour prior to the service, at the Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of the arrangements.

MDEQ hails brownfield assessments

Representatives for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality have been making the rounds, spreading the word on potential economic development benefits associated with brownfield assessment and cleanup across the state.
Trey Hess, MDEQ brownfield program coordinator, met with West Point Rotarians recently to let business leaders in on ways taking advantage of assessment grant money could work in their favor, particularly in West Point.

WPPD enforces sober driving with DSGPO campaign

Keeping the roads and highways safe from intoxicated drivers has been a debilitating battle for law enforcement for nothing short of a long time. The nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled over campaign has law enforcement on their tippy-toes as they comb the streets for impaired motorists.

Civic-minded individuals gathered with We Care Committee Director Luezarah "Lou" Robinson Tuesday to help dish out free goodies to the needy.
The giveaway has been a long-driving endeavor Robinson has toiled diligently with in an effort to spread some level of cheer to individuals who lack the means to consistently keep stock of essential necessities.
Robinson said responding to the call to arms was a might granted to her by her deeply rooted faith in God.

Funeral services are Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at 11 a.m. from Pilgrim Grove M.B. Church with Bishop William Golden officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery.
Visitation is Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
