Temperatures prompt TVA energy warning

The Tennessee Valley Authority witnessed its second highest peak in its history Tuesday, which set off red flags that demanded a swift reaction, but only for a brief couple of hours.
With a preliminary peak demand of 32,460 megawatts at about 7 a.m. and an average temperature of 4 degrees, TVA shipped out an advisory to local power companies requesting that they reduce the voltage for a brief bout to help suppress the excess energy use.

CCSD investigates 4-wheeler theft

The Clay Count Sheriff Department is searching for leads in a recent 4-wheeler and trailer theft, which occurred at some point in the afternoon New Year’s eve.
According to a press release provided by the CCSD, the theft occurred between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 21668 Hwy. 50, Pheba.
The 4-wheeler model is a 2012 Honda Rubicon. As per the release, the vehicle is reported as having a “camouflage” color scheme with “black SS (straight-side) rims.” The serial number for the 4-wheeler is 1HFTE2665C4200056.

John W, Townsend age 82, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at his home.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. from Pleasant Plain M.B. Church with Rev. Roosevelt Foard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation is today, Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Lou Shurden Savage

Lou Shurden Savage age 68, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 3, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North Mississippi in Oxford.
The family celebrated Lou’s life with a service beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Jan. 5, 2014. at the First United Methodist Church in Batesville, a committal service followed in Magnolia Cemetery also in Batesville. The family received friends two and a half hours prior to the celebration service in the church sanctuary at 1 p.m. Mr. John Howell, Jr. officiating the service. Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Grover Fairchild

Mr. John Grover Fairchild 98, passed away Jan. 5, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
He was born May 31, 1915, in Leake County the son of the late Louella Martin and Lofton Marion Fairchild. He was a self - employed farmer and was a member of Bible Baptist Church where he was Song Director. He married Doretha Keller Fairchild in the Spring of 1990 in Marshall, Texas.

GRENADA – Chance Wilson scored 14 points with eight rebounds, helping Oak Hill capitalize in its finale in the Kirk Academy 2014 Basketball Classic with a 54-34 win over DeSoto School (Ark.) Saturday morning.
The Raiders’ Drake Riley scored nine points, shooting three of six from the free-throw line. After scoring double digits in the past three games, Oak Hill’s Drew Riley only registered five points along with two other teammates, sophomore Heath Ford and junior Riley Pierce.

WP downs Shannon, readies for Saltillo

COLUMBUS — The Shannon Red Raider supporters were verbal in the New Hope High School gymnasium. The fans urged their defense to prevent West Point’s “No. 2” from getting the basketball in his hands.
Shannon, though, had few answers for the Green Wave point guard, A.J. Jones, as the green and white’s floor general was the key cog in the final 16 minutes, leading West Point to a 72-56 win over the Red Raiders in the New Hope New Year Classic Saturday afternoon.

Common sense vital to combat frigid weather

For the duration of this week, West Point will be hit by an extraordinary cold spell. Monday’s highs were in the mid 20s with lows in the single digits with similarly cold conditions expected for the next few days. With that, it’s imperative that individuals be wary of certain elements while trying to stay warm throughout the week.
“This is probably the coldest temperatures we’ve had in years,” said West Point Fire Department Chief Johnny Littlefield. “I can’t remember it being this cold with the windchill the way it is.”

McKee appointed as board president

The Clay County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting of the new year Monday, which included the annual appointment of a new board president and vice president. District 5 Supervisor Floyd McKee was appointed as the president for the duration of this year while District 1 Supervisor Lynn Horton was elected as the board’s vice president.
As president, McKee will be responsible for overseeing regularly scheduled board meetings.
“You’re kind of a like a judge in a court,” McKee said. “You try and lead in the right direction.”

Anna Elizabeth “Anna Beth” Davis passed away at her home in Yazoo County, Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Anna Beth was born April 11, 2013, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
She battled her illness in four hospitals over two states for the first six months of her life. October 8, 2013, she was released from the St. Louis Children’s Hospital to return home to Yazoo County.
