Oak Hill netters fall short of overall title

May 8, 2013

Coming into Wednesday’s action in Ridgeland, head coach Brian Middleton and his Oak Hill Academy tennis team had an opportunity to bring home a boys’ and girls’ state title from the Mississippi Association of Independent School AA State Tournament. Following a morning sweep of the semi-finals in the boys’ singles and girls’ singles brackets, the Oak Hill Netters looked primed to take home the victory and a championship trophy.

Pedestrian OK after being struck by car

Wednesday afternoon, at perhaps the busiest intersection for walkers and motorists, a woman was struck by a car as she was crossing the street at the intersection of East Main Street and Commerce Street.

A one thousand word essay was Bobby Cole’s worst nightmare when he was a high school English student.
It was a bad dream he had while asleep at his remote deer camp several years ago that would eventually become the inspiration to a 90,000 word novel, “The Dummy Line.”

A MORNING SWEEP

The Oak Hill Netters are currently battling at the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) AA Classification State Tennis Finals at the Ridgeland Tennis Center in Ridgeland.

The Oak Hill Tennis team and head coach Brian Middleton took a clean sweep in the morning semi-finals as Anna Ready and Jessi Cole advanced in their respective girls’ singles brackets and David McElwaine and John Willis Stevens punched their tickets to the finals as well. The Raider tennis team on dropped one set in the four semi-final matches.

Wards 1 and 2 welcome new selectmen, Wards 3 and 5 could head to runoff

West Point citizens already knew they were going to have a new mayor and a new Ward 1 selectmen after Tuesday night.
Scott Ross (mayor) and Rod Bobo (Ward 1) decided not to run in the 2013 municipal elections, paving the way for Harmon Robbie Robinson to become Mayor and Linda Hannah to take over the post in Ward 1.
Ward 2's incumbent Homer Cannon has been defeated by William Binder.

McBrayer: It is still going to be a challenge

Initial election results on Tuesday night indicate that Keith McBrayer will keep his Ward 4 post, and it is a landslide victory.
With a little over 700 total absentee votes to be counted, McBrayer has already secured 93 percent of the vote in his ward against opponent A.C. House Jr.
McBrayer leads 733-50.
"That's great," McBrayer said from the Civic on Tuesday night after ballots had been counted, noting that this was the largest margin of victory for him to date.
