It has been a memorable May for Oak Hill senior Anna Ready as she clinched an individual state championship in the MAIS AA no. 1 Girls’ Singles tournament at the Ridgeland Tennis Center May 8.

After losing 2 of 3 to the Rebels last weekend in Oxford, the 16th ranked Diamond Dawgs (40-16, 16-14 SEC) returned to their winning ways in SEC play, taking 2 out of 3 at home from #12 South Carolina (39-16, 17-12 SEC) on the final regular season weekend to claim the 5th overall seed in the SEC. By taking one of three from the Bulldogs on Friday, the Gamecocks secured 4th place in the SEC seedings for the upcoming tournament in Hoover, Alabama, and a first round bye.

Not originally scheduled to participate in the spring game in Baldwyn with Baldwyn High School and Hatley High School, the Oak Hill Raider football team did not let a scheduling change ruin their conclusion to spring practices Thursday evening.

Coming off a 6-6 season and their first playoff appearance since 2009, the Oak Hill Raiders have used their spring practices as a way to continue the success that head coach Daniel Merchant brought to the program in 2012.

An early Monday morning on the couch led me to flip through the cable box over to ESPN’s Classic channel, seeing that there was not anything currently on besides info-commercials. When I finally flipped over, I was delighted to see the grainy, black and white re-run of the 1960 television show, “Home Run Derby”. In the second episode of the lone syndicated season, the Chicago Cub hall of famer Ernie Banks fell to the legendary New York Yankee Mickey Mantle 5-3.

Coming into Wednesday’s action in Ridgeland, head coach Brian Middleton and his Oak Hill Academy tennis team had an opportunity to bring home a boys’ and girls’ state title from the Mississippi Association of Independent School AA State Tournament. Following a morning sweep of the semi-finals in the boys’ singles and girls’ singles brackets, the Oak Hill Netters looked primed to take home the victory and a championship trophy.
