Leake Rebelettes claim North title over Lady Raiders

CANTON — Anna Evans scored a game-high 23 points, Victoria Sprayberry added 17 and the Leake Rebelletes capped their 12th straight MAIS Class-AA North Tournament title with a 72-29 win Saturday afternoon at Canton Academy.
Evans scored her first 13 points during the first half, and Sprayberry knocked down three of her first five 3-pointers during the second quarter. The combination of Evans and Sprayberry gave Leake a 21-point advantage by the break, 37-16.

Raiders make history, drop title game

CANTON — The Oak Hill Raiders made great strides for its boys’ basketball program this weekend.
Making their first appearance in the MAIS Class-AA North championship game, the Raiders looked to cap a perfect weekend, but the game turned bittersweet for the red-and-white.
Junior Alex Shepard scored a game-high 34 points, and the Leake Rebels defeated Oak Hill, 64-55, Saturday night at Canton Academy.

Hebron Lady Eagles fall in title game

BENTON — After claiming their eighth District 3-A title in nine seasons, the Hebron Christian Lady Eagles were searching for another triumphant weekend.
Standing in their way was the District 4-A champions, the Carroll Lady Rebels, in the MAIS Class-A North-Central tournament championship game.
Behind strong second and third quarters, Carroll claimed the North-Central title over Hebron, 56-43, Saturday evening at Benton Academy.

Hebron Eagles fall to Immanuel, Lady Eagles advance

BENTON – The Immanuel Christian Rams weathered a first-half storm to outpace the Hebron Christian Eagles in the second half (40-26) and claim a narrow, 66-63 win Friday night in the MAIS Class-A North-Central tournament at Benton Academy.
“We came out tonight with intensity, but we weren’t doing the little things,” Immanuel Head Coach Greg Watkins said. “We wanted this one real bad. We knew how good Hebron was, and I think that gave us some jitters. After halftime, we came out with a better focus.”

Lady Raiders defeat Winston, claim spot in championship

CANTON – A lesson of perseverance was learned Friday night.
The Oak Hill Lady Raiders claimed a 58-54 win over the Winston Lady Patriots in a MAIS Class-AA North tournament semi-final at Canton Academy.
“About a week ago, it seemed like Winston had our number, but we got the one that counted,” Oak Hill Head Coach Stan Hughey said.

OHA, Hebron head to postseason tournaments

The Clay County schools affiliated with the MAIS are headed to the basketball postseason after their respective district tournaments last week.
Oak Hill girls and boys teams qualified for the MAIS Class-AA North tournament at Canton Academy, and the Hebron Christian girls and boys teams claimed spots in the MAIS Class-A North-Central tournament at Benton Academy. Both tournaments start today with full-day slates after inclement winter weather postponed opening round games.

CALHOUN CITY — The Hebron Christian Junior High Lady Eagles had a championship on their mind for the 2013-14 season.
The goal was achieved as the Lady Eagles claimed their second consecutive District 3-A junior high title with a 32-17 victory over the Central Academy Junior High Saturday night at Calhoun Academy in Calhoun City.
In the championship contest, freshmen Rebekah Falkner and Holly Hudson led the Lady Eagles with 10 and nine points, respectively. Brooke Griffin added six points in a game in which Hebron never trailed Central.

West Point holds off New Hope, 74-67

Tony Craddeth scored 18 points, Tre Williams added 17, and the West Point Green Wave (21-5; 3-2 District 2-5A) outlasted the New Hope Trojans, 74-67, in a MHSAA District 2-5A game Tuesday night at West Point High School.

Williams, Green Waves ink national letters of intent

Six West Point Green Wave football seniors signed their individual national letters of intent on National Signing Day Wednesday morning at West Point High School.
Aeris Williams was the main focus in the high school’s auditorium as the senior tailback finally inked with Mississippi State University after verbally committing to the Bulldogs in early August.
Though already verbally committed, Williams said he was still nervous when he made the announcement on the auditorium stage.

Sarah Dill scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds, helping the Oak Hill Lady Raiders defeat the Marshall Lady Raiders, 51-31, in a MAIS non-district game Friday night at Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
“We shot pretty good and held their best player scoreless,” Oak Hill Head Coach Stan Hughey said. “We ran some different offensive sets and had a good night in general. The seniors played well.”
